Most obvious is the new, trimmer masthead. The tall ASCII-art INFOSYS letters that have graced the INFOSYS masthead since v1 n1 are gone. Second, INFOSYS has gone legit with the acquisition of an ISSN. INFOSYS is the first electronic serial in New Zealand to request an ISSN. The folks at the National Library didn't know quite how to handle the archiving requirement. For the short term three printed copies of INFOSYS will be sent to the National Library, but hopefully soon an electronic archive can be established for INFOSYS and other electronic serials that are sure to follow. Third, the masthead now includes Peter Weiss as an INFOSYS listowner. Actually Peter has been an unsung hero of INFOSYS for some time. His advice about Listserver operations was invaluable when we set up INFOSYS. In December he took over administrative chores such as deleting subscribers with invalid addresses or subscribers who could not unsubscribe themselves. Last week he reset some INFOSYS Listserver parameters, tested with Monday's test message. He is my Listserver guru and his valuable contribution is now recognised with the inclusion of his name on the masthead. \EOA 0544* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ANNOUNCEMENT - New Editor and Focus for "The Information Society" * * Rob Kling, University of California, Irvine * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "The Information Society" journal is a forum for thoughtful analysis of the impacts, policies, system concepts, methodologies and cultural change related to these trends. It is a quarterly, refereed journal that publishes scholarly articles, position papers, short communications and book reviews. "The Information Society" is a multidisciplinary journal whose audience includes policy- and decision-makers and scientists in government, industry and education; managers concerned with the effects of the information revolution on individuals, organizations and society; and scholars with an interest in issues regarding the Information Society. "The Information Society" is undergoing a transition under the leadership of its new Editor-in-Chief, Rob Kling. The journal's new editorial board will be experimenting with new electronic and paper formats. Rob Kling is soliciting individual articles and proposals from people who wish to organize and edit special issues. Among the topics (partial list) addressed within the journal are: --changing National Information Infrastructures, especially as they influence cultural expectations and social practices --the implications of the coming surge in electronic data interchange and electronic commerce among businesses globally --options for, and implications of, various forms of "electronic democracy" --the rise of "virtual communities" of persons worldwide engaging in "many-to-many" communication among their participants, irrespective of borders or corporate structures --the role of place and space in visions and practice of digital libraries and electronic forums --the structure of the information industries, including markets, industrial alliances, the character of work, and management-labor relations. Manuscripts should be sent in triplicate (or electronically by Internet) to the editor-in-chief. For manuscript format details, contact the editor or see the inside back cover of an issue of the journal. An institutional subscription to Volume 11 (1995; issued quarterly) is US$86 and personal subscription is US$43. A free sample copy and subscription form is available from the editor-in-chief. This year's theme will be dedicated to the Application of Object-Oriented/Entity-Relationship Technologies to Information Systems Modelling. The Entity-Relationship approach has been extensively used in many database system and information system design methodologies. Recently, Object-Oriented Technology has drawn tremendous interest not only from the research community but it has also moved into mainstream industrial software design and development. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: --Integrating the ER & O-O technologies --Design methodologies for object-oriented information systems --Re-engineering of database systems --Business process modelling --Enterprise modelling --Temporal databases --Geographic information systems --Secure databases --Schema evolution --Object-oriented multi-media databases --Advanced query interfaces --CASE environments --Expert systems and applications. For the purposes of O-O ER'95 modelling will be considered in a broad sense and can cover any theoretical as well as practical issue. Practitioner's papers reporting on actual experience are particularly welcome and will be reviewed in a separate category. Five copies of original and unpublished papers up to 5,000 words should be sent to the Program Committee Chair. Submissions must include contact information (contact name, postal and e-mail address, and phone number), a 100-word abstract, and explicitly indicate the paper area.
