Each site archives INFOSYS differently, one stores INFOSYS back issues, one is keyword searchable, and one is both. INFOSYS Archive in the United States: This is an archive of INFOSYS back issues and a keyword search. Thanks to Eric Morgan at North Carolina State University for establishing this United States-based archive. ftp://ftp.lib.ncsu.edu/stacks/serials/infosys/ wais://wais.lib.ncsu.edu/infosys http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/stacks/infosys-index.html INFOSYS Archive in Australia: This is an archive of INFOSYS issues, no keyword search. Robert McArthur established this first INFOSYS Archive at Queensland University of Technology: http://www.fit.qut.edu.au/~mcarthur/infosys INFOSYS Archive in Europe: A keyword searchable archive maintained by Brian Fitzgerald of University College Cork in Dublin, Ireland is available at (tread lightly here, this one is still under construction): http://www.ucc.ie/htbin/infosys If anyone knows of other sites, please let me know. One of the reasons why you may wish to use these archives is to find the full text of INFOSYS articles cited in the Calendar of Upcoming Events (see sample below). The Calendar is available from listserv@american.edu (see instructions in "About INFOSYS"). The wealth of opportunities for publication, presentation, and networking with colleagues is clearly evident in the Calendar. The U.S. Department of Education reports that only one-third of the nation's public schools have access to the Internet. However, 75% have computers, 74% have cable TV and 70% have broadcast TV. (Broadcasting & Cable 2/13/95 p.51) MANAGING DESKTOPS COSTS PLENTY: Forrester Research Inc. estimates the annual cost to large corporations of maintaining each personal computer is $3,830. The biggest expense is support personnel, with one support person per 50 PC users estimated at $1,420 per user. Downtime runs a close second, at $1,350 per PC per year. The good news is, the cost of PC management is expected to drop by half over the next three years, as computer products become more compatible and less troublesome. (Wall Street Journal 2/16/95 A1) CHEAPER FAULT-TOLERANT COMPUTERS: Stratus Computers knows its customers -- and has answered their prayers with fault-tolerant computers that are designed to never fail but are priced competitively with "high-availability" systems that are often chosen as a less expensive compromise. The new machines -- targeted at users of vital business applications, such as airline reservations and telecommunications routing -- are priced competitively with "high-availability" systems, costing as little as $98,000 for a system. (Information Week 2/20/95 p.78) "THE COOLEST COMPUTER COULD... " Some of the winning answers to Microsoft's contest for children to answer the sentence, "The coolest computer could..." are: recreate extinct animals and plants, and interpret their language so you could spend the afternoon chatting with a dodo bird and find out what the world was like three million years ago; babysit your baby brother by making a hologram to entertain him (the computer would also feed him!); allow you to see the world out of someone else's eyes. Winners get to have lunch with the $7 billion man himself. (Miami Herald 2/17/95 F1) IS THERE LIFE BEYOND THE INTERNET? John Barker of the U.K.'s "Inside Multimedia" newsletter warns businessmen: "If you are not on the Internet you are not going to be around by the end of the decade. What future is there for traditional banking when you can log on, go through some serious security barrier, then manipulate your money on the screen? What future is there for traditional software distribution when you can log on, download some demo software, like it, pay for it with plastic money, then have it downloaded to your PC?" (Inside Multimedia 11/30/94 p.30) "MORE PRACTICE, LESS THEORY," SAY SOFTWARE COMPANIES Software companies say American universities are turning out students with little practical training applicable to the real world of software code writing. "There's no reason why a class can't build a whole operating system in a semester. But that rarely happens," says an Oracle Corp. senior VP. But educators contend that a broader approach is more beneficial over time: "Employers encourage students to get very narrow, very deep experience that meets their company's current needs, but in the long run breadth is better," says a computer science prof at the University of California at Berkeley. The University of Illinois is experimenting with letting 10% of its computer science majors tackle a commercial project during their senior year. (Wall Street Journal 2/21/95 B1) EMPLOYERS GIVE SCHOOLS VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE A U.S. Census Bureau national survey has found that American employers think that schools and colleges are doing a poor job preparing their graduates for the workplace. Some companies no longer hire brand-new graduates for career-track positions, and to fill their own corporate training needs are much more likely to look to equipment vendors or private consultants than to formal educational institutions. (New York Times 2/20/95 A1) PRODUCTIVITY GAINS IN THE INFORMATION SECTOR Communications consultant Glenn Ralston denies the validity of studies claiming that investments in computing have a low payback. "There is an internal systematic contradiction in that our whole method for reporting economic change has no ability to incorporate necessary changes in the fundamental definitions themselves... Strong productivity gains are largely in information, a third, unmeasured economic sector in addition to the measured production and service sectors." (Indianapolis Star 2/16/95 A11) ONLINE FORUM FOR IT MANAGERS: The Center for Information Systems Management at the University of Texas in Austin has established a home page on the World Wide Web which it hopes will become a forum for discussion of information technology management issues. "Mosaic and its progeny will be the interface that corporations will have to migrate to, and we're trying to help prepare them," says the Center's director. URL is http://cism.bus.utexas.edu. (Information Week 2/27/95 p.92) Editor's Note: Edupage, a summary of news items on information technology, is a service of Educom. This is an abbreviated list of news items of interest to the IS community from the February 16, 19, and 21, 1995 issues. \EOA 0536* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CONFERENCE - ACM SIG on Computer Personnel Research (SIGCPR) * * Ryan Nelson, Univ of Virginia * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ACM SIG on Computer Personnel Research (SIGCPR) April 6-8, 1995 Nashville, Tennessee The Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Computer Personnel Research (SIGCPR) is a group of approximately 200 IS academics and practitioners who share an interest in the careers, training, attitudes and management of information systems professionals and end users. This year's SIGCPR conference explores the theme of the personnel and related issues raised by the need for IS to support teams and groups both inside (e.g., systems development groups) and outside (i.e., work groups) the IS function. The conference will bring together researchers and practitioners involved in the theory, development, deployment, and analysis of interactive, computer-based systems. The 1995 conference will provide a mix of innovative technical sessions and cultural events. In addition to traditional paper presentations, the conference will include extended poster presentations, demonstrations, small group discussions, and cooperatively produced summaries of research areas. In addition to accepted tutorials, there will be a day-long tutorial/workshop for people wishing to learn more about activity theory, the branch of Russian psychology dealing with the interactions between humans, artifacts, and the environment. The tutorial will include talks, demonstrations of activity theory applied to design, and hands-on exercises. The working language of the conference will be English, with translation into Russian provided when necessary. Questions should be directed to ew-info.chi@xerox.com.
