Since then, even access to fax machines has been restricted. Consortium members are working to develop standards for the Web. The deal allows Microsoft to use the conventional "NCSA Mosaic," and also the commercial version called "Enhanced NCSA Mosaic." The University of Illinois' National Center for Supercomputing Applications receives a portion of all royalties on Mosaic licenses. American Express joins Visa International and MasterCard, which also have recently formed online alliances. Descriptions of technology-supported teaching theatres and electronic learning labs are of special interest. Many schools are now in the process of designing, building or updating these types of facilities. We would like to include a description of your facility in this ISWorldNet stop on the web. You can visit the E-Classrooms and E-Lab sections (under development) of the Technology-Supported Learning pages at http://www.bmgt.umd.edu/Business/AcademicDepts/IS/Learning/learn.html or see an example of an e-classroom posting at http://www.bmgt.umd.edu/Business/AcademicDepts/IS/Learning/ibmtq.html To post your electronic classroom, send the http: address or a ready- to-paste e-mail detailed summary of your facility to me (attach a .gif photo if possible). We are also developing repository areas for our shared "lessons learned" in designing, constructing, and operating these complex environments. Other types of learning-related projects may be appropriate for our other Learning page subtopics and can still be sent to me. Topical page managers are developing plans for soliciting relevant materials for their topical areas, but there is plenty of room for involvement and content posting if you are active in technology-supported learning. Information networks and computers are routinely processing private, proprietary, sensitive, classified, and critical information. The Internet has created an addiction to information and instantaneous information exchange in the military, government, and private sectors. Computers are making decisions ranging from the mundane to life threatening. The Conference will explore a broad range of technology applications with security and safety concerns. Technical papers, panels, vendor presentations, and tutorials that address the application of computer security and safety technologies in the civil, defence, and commercial environments are solicited. Selected papers will be those that present examples of in-place or attempted solutions to these problems in real applications; lessons learned; and original research, analyses, and approaches for defining the computer security issues and problems. Of particular interest are papers that present descriptions of secure systems in use or under development, presenting general strategy, methodologies for analyzing the scope and nature of integrated computer security issues, and potential solutions. Areas of Interest: --Security in Enterprise Modeling and Reengineering --Trusted System Architectures and Technology --Encryption Applications (e.g., Digital Signatures) --Certification, Evaluation, and Accreditation --Application of Formal Assurance Methods --Trusted DBMSs, Operating Systems, and NetworksSecurity Policy and Management Issues --Electronic Document Interchange --Open Systems and Composed Systems --Software Safety Analysis and Design --Risk/Hazard Assessments --AIS Security Tools Submission deadline: May 31, 1995. The program undertakes research into the work practices and organisational contexts of work within settings that are organised around the use of computer technology. There are two objectives to the program. The first is to gain knowledge of the ways in which people currently use technology in their work: to build detailed descriptions of the practices through which they accomplish their work, and to explore the relationship between technology, organisations and practice. The second objective is to contribute to new technologies by grounding them in a detailed knowledge of the work they will support or automate and the organisational structures within which they will be deployed, and to explore ways of enhancing work processes and work practices to make better use of technology. Currently the programme is staffed from the disciplines of sociology, psychology and computer science. However, we wish to extend our expertise, and we are looking for someone who can contribute skills from the management and organisational sciences, though persons with appropriate interests from other relevant disciplines will also be considered. In particular, the person appointed will be able to bring a quantitative approach to existing projects in a way that complements the mainly qualitative stance taken towards research within the programme. In addition the appointed person will have a strong commitment to, and knowledge of the use of technology to support organisational, work and business processes. The successful candidate will have recently completed a Ph.D. and will be able to demonstrate practical project management experience and competence in the preparation of research reports for both a scientific and a business community.
