The service will be free to online shoppers, who may use Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card, Diners Club, Carte Blanche, JCB Card or American Express to pay for goods and services advertised on the Net. (Investor's Business Daily 12/6/94 A15) WHAT'S IN A NAME (WHEN IT'S INTERNET)? A electronic banking company called Internet Inc. has a lock on using "Internet" in a name, having received a trademark on the word in 1990. The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office now has 64 unhappy applicants pressuring it to reconsider its decision, with everyone from the Internet Society to Internet in a Box technically in legal limbo until the issue is sorted out. (Business Week 12/5/94 p.8) COMPAQ HAS PENTIUM PROBLEM LICKED Compaq Computer has created a software "bandaid" to disable the flawed portion of Intel's Pentium microprocessor. The fix, which tricks the software systems into thinking the floating point unit isn't there, is an interim solution until a corrected chip is available from Intel. (Wall Street Journal 12/6/94 A4) Meanwhile, Compaq is shipping desktop computers designed to make the Pentium chip work even faster. The TriFlex-PCI architecture speeds up the performance of a 90 MHz Pentium chip by up to 23% over other PCs running on the same chip. (Investor's Business Daily 12/6/94 A17) CRACKERS STRIKE AGAIN A forthcoming book on gang wars in cyberspace has prompted retalia- tion by some of the alleged subjects, who broke into computer systems run by Sprint, IBM and Pipeline, used them to gain control of the author's telephone line and voice mail, and bombarded his e-mail account with thousands of messages. The description of two cyber- gangs, the Masters of Deception and the Legion of Doom, appeared as an excerpt in Wired magazine, which also received about 1,000 messages over the Thanksgiving weekend. Sprint was forced to shut down several computers for about four hours to straighten things out. (Wall Street Journal 12/5/94 B6) HIDING INFORMATION USING COMPUTERS Canada's information commissioner says the computer is fast becoming the federal government's new weapon to shield its activities. A study by Information Management and Economics conducted for the commissioner urges Ottawa to rethink how it collects and stores information in order to ensure the public has affordable and reasonable access in the decades ahead. (Ottawa Citizen 11/28/94 A3) TELECOMMUTING AND DOWNTOWN RETAILERS Government and corporate downsizing and changing telecommuting policies have sparked fears among retailers in the downtown cores of Canadian cities. Merchants fear they will be unable to survive as employees leave the core in favor of telecommuting from their homes in the suburbs. (Ottawa Sun 11/29/94 p. 29) BE A LAWYER, GET FLAMED, CHANGE CAREERS, MAKE A BUNDLE The two lawyers who raised hackles last April with their indiscriminate advertising in Usenet groups have given up their immigration law practice for the lure of cyberspace consulting. Their suggestions for those who wish to advertise on the Net include: 1) Think globally -- the Internet reaches people all over the world; 2) Exploit the network in every way possible, and don't worry about a few rankled users; 3) Enlist the help of a commercial online service; and 4) Be patient. Magal, State University Ohio * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * You are probably aware of the ISWorld Net project that was recently announced via INFOSYS. Briefly, ISWorld Net seeks to provide a single entry point for all IS related resources on the world wide web. This is a request for volunteers to get involved in the TEACHING AND LEARNING department of ISWorld Net. Past experience with world wide web is not critical, but you must be willing to learn quickly. A lot is already created. Various pages related to pedagogy, learning support systems, and curriculum are in various states of development and seeking page managers. A lot more needs to be done. There is ample room for innovation and new ideas in the Teaching and Learning department. If you have ideas that do not naturally fit in the current architecture of the Teaching and Learning pages, let me know and we can work something out. For more information on how to contribute I suggest that you do the following: (1) visit the ISWorld Net home page at http://www.cox.smu.edu/mis/iswnet/home.html to see what this is all about, (2) visit the *CONTRIBUTING TO ISWORLD NET* department of the ISWorld Net home page, (3) visit the Teaching and Learning page at url http://www-cba.bgsu.edu/~smagal/tandp/home.html and browse around the various sub-departments (and sub-sub departments, etc.) to see what is out there, and (4) contact the following people, as appropriate: Simha Magal (smagal@cba.bgsu.edu) for pages related to pedagogy and curriculum, Brad Wheeler (bwheeler@bmgtmail.umd.edu) for pages related to Learning Support Systems and Sid Huff (shuff@novell.business.uwo.ca) for pages related to Teaching IS with Cases. /EOA 0436* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CONFERENCE - Social Contexts of Hypermedia * * Kenneth Nilsson, Umea University * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Workshop on Social Contexts of Hypermedia February 16-17, 1995 Umea University, Sweden. The workshop will be focused on hypermedia in their use settings. What do hypermedia systems mean for applications like collaborative work, decision support, education, community networks, and business administration? In what way do hypermedia affect the nature of knowledge? Do the break up and non-linearity of information in hypermedia systems mean more fragmented knowledge? What requirements must be put on the computer human interface and the organisation of information in order to navigate through the informa- tion without getting lost? The purpose of this workshop is to discuss the theoretical basis for the study of various social aspects of the use of hypermedia systems and its implications for the design of such systems. Organization of the workshop: February 16: Invited Speeches February 17: Group discussions, where each participant is supposed to take active part. The number of participants will be limited to 50. Important dates: January 9: Application for participation and position statement for the second day's discussions. January 13: Confirmation of acceptance of participation. Distribution of final program and abstracts of the speeches and participants' position statements. January 31: Payment due. Position statements: To further the discussions on the second day of the workshop each participant is presupposed to give a position statement (1 - 4 pages) on an important question within the theme of the workshop, accompanying the application for participation. Workshop fee: The workshop fee is 3000-3250 Swedish Crowns (about US $ 400), inclu- ding accommodation (the higher price for a central hotel) and meals.
