Early indications report a 73% increase in productivity. (Toronto Star 11/15/94 B11) AT PLAY ON HOME PCs: Yet another survey has confirmed that most PCs in the home are used for entertainment, rather than high-minded intellectual pursuits, despite the fact that most parents justify the expense by telling themselves they'll use it for personal finances or for their children's education. "Parental guilt is a fundamental driving factor" in PC sales, says an industry analyst. (Wall Street Journal 11/15/94 B1) VIRTUALLY TOGETHER: Scientists at the University of Washington's Human Interface Laboratory have a virtual hook-up to the Fujitsu Research Institute in Tokyo, and the two teams are using the technology to perform tasks such as jointly herding small electronic creatures across a simulated conference table. "This is the most ambitious effort to date," says U S West's executive director of technology development. "This is the way humans really interact. They don't talk through a glass screen on a computer. People have talked about cyberspace for a long time. Here it is." (Wall Street Journal 11/16/94 B1) PENTIUM POWER: Do you really need to upgrade to a Pentium now? The National Software Testing Laboratories found that a machine equipped with a 60-Mhz Pentium's performance is about 30% faster than a 66-Mhz 486 machine. On Windows applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel, Pentiums ran about 40% faster than 486s. (Business Week 11/21/94 p.128) SMALL BUSINESSES FUEL PC SALES: After the home computer market, small businesses have the largest untapped potential for spurring PC sales. "The smaller guys are adopting new technologies faster than our larger accounts," says Dell Computer's VP for worldwide marketing. They must be doing something right -- a recent survey shows that the revenue per employee in companies with high computer use is 2.5 times that of low-tech companies. (Business Week 11/21/94 p.82.) E-MAIL DRIVING THE SYSTEM? Analysts at BIS Strategic Decisions say multimedia and video will not be the primary motivators behind the move toward ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) technology on the Net. Instead, fancy e-mail messages containing attached text, graphics and images will be the biggest factor. Many companies are indeed investing large amounts of money in formal strategic information systems planning (SISP). Yet, indications are that very few of the grand strategic plans are in fact successfully implemented and that those which are implemented do not necessarily lead to the attainment of sustained competitive advantage or even to higher company returns. I should be very grateful to hear about empirical research, or to be pointed to publications discussing the results of such research, in which the hypothesis has been or is being addressed that the larger majority of firms do not succeed in translating their strategic IS plans into competitive advantage and/or increased company earnings. Thanks in advance for any forthcoming contributions! Information and communication systems embedded in a global net have profound influence on the tourism and leisure industry and will alter it considerably. Reservation systems, distributed multi-media systems, highly mobile working places, so-called "electronic markets" are the first noticeable results of this development. Advances in the use and development of tools, technologies and methodologies that have facilitated the efficient netting of information and communication systems in the tourism industry are discussed within ENTER. Apart from scientific and technical sessions the conference offers additional tutorials, workshops and presentations for practitioners in the area of tourism. ENTER is directed towards two target groups: system developers and practitioners which are actively involved in the field of touristic information technology and methodology as well as system users and practitioners. ENTER represents the first international forum of this kind and is intended to be held in regular intervals. Each of these conferences is headed by a general topic which will especially be dealt with by the presentations for the practitioners. The general topic for 1995 is entitled electronic marketing. Contributions in the scientific and technical range cover the following areas: --information systems --enterprise modelling --expert systems --decision support systems --multi-media --capacity management --distributed systems - WAN's --system architectures --reservation systems --management information systems --management/organization/business and national economical aspects --virtual reality and tourism Presentations in the application oriented range cover topics as (beside others): --information highway --end consumer networks and tourism --information versus reservation systems Workshops cover topics as (beside others): --multimedia --the future for the travel agent --telecommunication - the technology race CONFERENCE FEES: Registration before 30 Nov 1994 after 1 Dec 1994 3-day ticket ATS 5.100 ATS 5.800 1-day ticket ATS 1.800 ATS 2.000 For further information please contact: Ms. Almut Wolfsgruber Tirol Werbung Boznerplatz 6 A-6020 Innsbruck Austria Phone: +43/512/5320-220 E-mail: 100431,3365@compuserve.com or Hannes Werthner Institute for Statistics, Operations Research and Computer Methods University of Vienna Universitaetsstr. 5/9 A- 1010 Vienna, Austria E-mail: werthner@ifs.univie.ac.at \EOA 0406* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALL FOR PAPERS - Computers in Context: Joining Forces in Design * * Susanne Boedker, Aarhus University * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Computers in Context: Joining Forces in Design August 14-18, 1995 Aarhus, Denmark The call for papers for this conference was published in the March 20, 1994 issue of INFOSYS (v1 n11, article 0095).
