Several readers wrote to ask follow-up questions about Edupage, Computists' Communique, or Flash Information. Also, a couple of new IS e-publications were suggested in response to my request for assistance. Most gratifying were the compliments from almost everyone about INFOSYS, especially n42. I appreciate these kind words, they help get me through lonely evenings of preparing tomorrow's issue. Flash Information is really pleased too, they wrote to say "We have had a tremendous response so far." The main article in this issue is the AIS membership application. Tis the season for faculty recruitment and a big pile of position announcements are in queue. Expect an INFOSYS at the end of the week devoted exclusively to position announcements. Those of you not looking for a new job can just press the delete key. \EOA 0374* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NEWS - From EDUPAGE * * Dennis Viehland, Massey University * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * DIGITAL HAS NEW ALPHA WORKSTATIONS AND SERVERS: Digital has three new workstation and five server computers based on its high-speed Alpha chip and able to run Unix and Windows NT operating system software. It will also be announcing a new portable PC line. (Wall Street Journal Nov 3 1994 B6) PC SALES TO SURPASS COLOR TV SALES: The Electronic Industries Association says that PC sales to consumers will be $8 billion for 1994, more than a half a billion greater than color TV sales for the same period. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution Nov 2 1994 G2) MAKING ECONOMIC SENSE IN THE INFORMATION AGE: Dividing the economy into goods and services for the purpose of economic analysis just doesn't make sense anymore -- especially when the service sector now comprises everything from Microsoft to daycare centers. A new way to split the economy would create three sectors: goods, including mining, utilities and manufacturing, services, which are people-oriented, and information, which would include advertising and entertainment, communications, publishing, software, higher education, medical diagnosis and the securities industry. Under this new model, the information sector employed 15.3% of workers in 1993, and experienced a 3.2% growth in employment between 1989 and 1993. (Business Week Nov 7 1994 p.116) TOUCH-SCREEN TECHNOLOGY TAKES OFF: Touch-screen systems, which have gained wide-spread acceptance among even the technologically-uneasy, are showing up in fast-food restaurants, casinos and instant-teller machines. There were 90,000 installed touch-screen kiosks in 1993, a number which is expected to balloon by more than 500% by 1997. In this issue I enclose a copy of the AIS "Invitation to Become a Charter Member" and an electronic copy of the Charter Membership Application. The first meeting of the Association for Information Systems will be in conjunction with the ICIS conference, at 5.30pm on December 15 in the Balmoral Room of the Hyatt Regency. Further ahead, the first AIS conference will be August 26-27, 1995 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA. Association for Information Systems Invitation to Become a Charter Member The AIS Organizing Committee invites you to become a Charter Member of the Association for Information Systems (AIS). AIS is an organization that is dedicated to ensuring that the IS field develops a professional identify from a global perspective. Fifteen countries from each of the world's regions are represented on the Organizing Committee, and AIS's Constitution and Bylaws guarantee that members from all countries will play significant roles. For instance, the Presidency of AIS will rotate through three world regions - (1) the Americas, (2) Asia and the Pacific, and (3) Europe, Africa and the Middle East - and members from each of these regions are guaranteed permanent representation on the AIS governing Council. AIS supports ICIS (the International Conference on Information Systems) and we also plan that each of the AIS World Regions will organize annual or biannual regional conferences. These conferences are intended to provide a wide variety of activities such as workshops, tutorials, tracks for special interest presentations, etc., that are complementary to ICIS. We plan that this will offer greater opportunities for active participation in meetings for AIS members. Our plan is to try to implement the "Plan Globally and Act Locally" dictum by having meetings in each World Region that involve papers presented primarily by those in the region with some tutorials and workshops conducted by top-flight people from other regions. AIS heavily subsidizes a subscription to one of three high-quality journals selected by each of its members. For only a $5 or $10(US) fee, members receive a full year's subscription to either the MIS Quarterly, Information Systems (a database journal) or the Journal of Organizational Computing. (See application for details). AIS plans to become the premier global organization for IS academics. Individuals who become Charter Members now will be eligible to vote for the first officers and Council of AIS in the Fall of 1994 and will receive a Charter Member certificate suitable for framing. AIS wishes to affiliate with existing national, regional and special interest organizations of IS academics and to promote the development of such organizations, possibly as subdivisions of AIS. In this way, we can achieve global goals while addressing local interests and issues. A membership application is enclosed. Please fill it out telling us of your own interests and volunteering, or recommending others, to be considered as nominees and as committee members. The Organizing Committee believes that AIS can fulfil important roles in creating an identity for IS academics, further establishing the credibility of the field, developing a vision for the future and enhancing opportunities for participation and communications among members. I hope that you will join with us to accomplish these goals. Sincerely, William R. King for the Organizing Committee Editor's note: a printed copy of the AIS Membership Application is available from Bill King . Please put "AIS Application Request" in the Subject: field and be sure to enclose your postal address. Applications on the printed form are preferred, but if necessary, this electronic form can be printed and mailed to the address shown below. The discussion topic is "Productive Alternatives to Traditional Information Technology." Research submitted for exchange should ideally be theoretically based and empirically tested or testable. Research may be at any stage of theoretical development: pre-proposal, research in progress, finished dissertation or mature post-doctoral research. More information upon these stages may be requested. This is a "devil's advocate" discussion on theoretical and practical alternative approaches to achieving HUMAN productivity (effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction) in lieu of traditional Information Technology (IT). Traditional IT based upon the natural sciences has not proven to increase productivity; in fact, productivity may slightly decrease as IT increasingly becomes more and more complex. Topics for alternative approaches which may increase productivity may include, but are not limited to: --new media, especially with new forms and contents --architectures including cognitive ergonomics --designs incorporating Living Systems principles --systems based on General Systems Theory --extensions of the human end-user into the media and cpu --research involving effects of human-perceived complexity --simplification of technical complexity in system design --multi-tasking, networking and parallel processing uses --systems implementing associative memory concepts --design stressing relationships between individuals and groups and the computer or other individuals and groups --new computer architectures --testing paradigms for cognitively oriented variables. A complete copy of this call for prospectus (significant dates, submittal requirements, sample prospectus) should be requested from the chair immediately. A confirmation of interest in panel participation is due to the chair no later than November 12. Extra information also available from the chair includes stages, discussion format, prospectus specifications (includes instructions to authors of papers), theory statement identifier definitions, instructions for reviewers. We welcome submissions on topics and applications focused on the humanities disciplines, defined as broadly as possible: languages and literature, history, philosophy, music, art, linguistics, anthropology and archaeology, creative writing, and cultural studies. We are interested in receiving technical proposals that focus on the cutting edge issues of the application of scientific tools and approaches to humanities disciplines; discipline-based proposals that focus on some of the more traditionally defined applications of computing in humanities disciplines, including text encoding, hypertext, text corpora, computational lexicography, statistical models, and syntactic, semantic, stylistic and other forms of text analysis; broad library and research-based proposals that focus on significant issues of text documentation and information retrieval; and tools-focused proposals that offer innovative and substantial applications and uses for humanities- based teaching and research, throughout the academic and research worlds.
