It reflects some minor INFOSYS changes: --The listserver at American University is moving to AIX so the BITNET-based address "@auvm" will no longer work. Subscribe and unsubscribe messages should go to listserv@american.edu and submission to INFOSYS should go to infosys@american.edu --As per a reader's suggestion, unsubscribe instructions have been added (I welcome feedback from readers). --The Calendar pointer has been integrated into ABOUT INFOSYS. --Robert McArthur of Queensland University of Technology has put INFOSYS back issues on the Web. The URL is: //www.fit.qut.edu.au/~mcarthur/infosys/ Another, North American, site will be announced soon. Meanwhile I continue to look for someone who will support a keyword searchable INFOSYS Archive. It has been over two weeks since v1 n40 was issued. The workflow in academia is a series of peaks and valleys and lately I have been climbing over a mountain range! Coming later this week: an issue of INFOSYS devoted to catching up on IS news (from Edupage and other sources) as well as a major update about membership in the newly- formed Association for Information Systems. Finally, some articles of note in this issue: Can't make it to the OASIS workshop in Vancouver in December? No worries, most of the papers are on-line at: http://www.umich.edu/~crowston/oasis94/oasis-subs.html Hats off to Kevin Crowston for his efforts in organising the workshop and publishing the proceedings on the Web. Check out the Japanese study of office automation conference. This was widely broadcast on the Net earlier, but without a firm date (and, inadvertently, with incorrect registration fee). Mr. Tanimurea is right on when he says "Your interest is the initial clue to broaden your scope and become truly international." I encourage those who have never left their own nation's borders to look at attending an international conference in 1995. There are plenty to choose from in INFOSYS. \EOA 0359* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ANNOUNCEMENT - ICIS 95 Call for Papers and Announcement on Web * * Hans Oppelland, Erasmus U Rotterdam * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The call for papers for the 16th International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS 95), December 10-13, 1995 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands is now available at: http://www.eur.nl/acab/ICIS/icis-cfp.html As information about ICIS 95 becomes available it will be posted at: http://www.eur.nl/acab/ICIS/icis-95.html Both pages plus ICIS 94 and other ICIS information is available at the ICIS home page: http://www.mgmt.uga.edu/ICIS/ICIShome.html \EOA 0360* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE - Handbook of IS Research Instruments * * Sanjay Seth, Southern Cross University * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Currently, we (Don Scott, Bruce Lo and myself) are commencing the compilation of a handbook of multi-item measures/instruments, used in information systems research. We would appreciate comments/ opinions on this project. The handbook will encompass a range of multi-item measures including all the relevant, validated multi-item measures/instruments (such as user information systems satisfaction, Baroudi and Orlikowski 1983; usefulness and ease of use of IS, Davids, 1989 etc) used in management information systems research. Comments will be included in relation to the development of the instruments, sample(s) used, validity, reliability, other evidence, sources, its administration and references. The benefits of such a handbook would be: --it will be helpful in reducing the time that it takes to locate instruments for survey research in the management information systems area --a concept can be often measured by several different instruments (ie. user satisfaction, involvement etc) and the handbook will provide researchers with different options. --the handbook may also serve as a partial guide to the literature for certain topic areas related to a construct and may facilitate further refinement of existing measures in terms of reducing items, dimensionality, reliability, and validity --it may also help to identify the areas where valid measures do not exist in the IS literature (ie. system usage/ utilisation etc) --it may also facilitate the cumulative research tradition (ie. increase the possibility of use of the same measures across several studies. The comparison and integration of results may also be enhanced.) --it may also be used to assist PhD and Masters students. --lastly but not the least, it would provide an excellent insight for practitioners, IS consultants, who might not be reading scholarly academic journals. To our knowledge a handbook of multi-item measures does not exist in the IS area. We would appreciate any comments on whether such a book would be considered to be of value and/or whether anyone is aware of any similar publication which may already have eventuated. We would also welcome any persons who might like to be associated with the project as a reviewer and/or guide or in some other capacity. The workshop will be held at the conference hotel and followed by a C$25 10-course Chinese banquet at a near-by restaurant (vegetarian available). Nineteen proposals for brief presentations were received. Most of these submissions are available on the Web: http://www.umich.edu/~crowston/oasis94/oasis-subs.html In the workshop we also seek wide participation from the audience. Therefore, some time will be devoted to small groups brainstorming on selected topics. In the past, these sessions have served to identify communities of interest. There is no need to preregister for the workshop (but you do need to prepay for the dinner). To register for that, send me a cheque for $25 Canadian (or a slight greater amount in *any* other currency, e.g., $20 US) payable to "University of Michigan". Also indicate if you want a vegetarian meal. Please respond by Nov 15. The growing reliance on client/server architectures, the growth of industrial- strength object-oriented techniques, advances in systems engineering automation, the emergence of powerful repository capabilities, multimedia opportunities, and other factors are already having a profound impact on the way systems are designed and implemented. CASE methods, techniques, tools, and environments are evolving to meet these many new needs. Indeed, the CASE in 1995 is far different from the CASE of the late 1980s. Now that CASE is past its initial marketplace boom and bust cycle, attention is turning to the value of CASE technology and the CASE approach for the long term in systems and software engineering. CASE '95 is the premier conference and working meeting of the CASE field. It is the crossroads of practitioners and researchers from industry, academia, and government. Major Topics include, but are not limited to: --CASE for systems engineering and evolutionary development --Enabling technologies for CASE environments --CASE adoption and technology transfer --Lifecycle Coverage and Methodology Support --Software Engineering Education CASE '95 seeks a broad perspective of the technical issues facing the CASE field. Feel free to suggest timely topics beyond the scope suggested here. Submissions Submit 5 copies of papers, experience reports, workshop, tutorial or panel proposals in English to one of the Program Co-Chairs by November 30, 1994. Notification of acceptance or rejection of all submissions will be made by March 15, 1995. The final papers will be due April 30, 1995. For papers submit 2000-5000 words, which have not been previously published and are not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Please include on the first page the title, all authors' names, complete contact information of the lead author (address, phone/fax numbers, e-mail), a short abstract of no more than 250 words, a list of descriptive keywords, and a specification of the type of submission (Research/ Experience). Workshop Proposals should include a title, the proposed chair or co- chairs, the tentative list of invited speakers, proposed duration (half-day or full-day), a description of the workshop subject, and a supporting rationale. Panel Proposals should include a title, the proposed chair, the tentative panelists, a brief description of the panel session subject, and a supporting rationale. Panelists should have agreed to participate before the submission of the proposal. Tutorials Proposals should address computer-aided software engineering topics that are of particular interest to practitioners. Proposals for full-day or half-day tutorials should include a detailed outline of the material, a description of past experience with the tutorial, an assessment of the materials' maturity, and credentials of the instructor.
