(Information Week 8/29/94 p.48) IMAGE PRESENTS RECRUITING PROBLEMS: Perceptions of computer careers as "nerdy" have caused serious concerns for recruiters in the software development industry in Canada, where a shortage of about 4,000 software professionals currently exists, but few students are taking notice. (Toronto Globe & Mail 8/30/94 C1) SELL IT WITH A KISS: The KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) approach to selling computers is catching on, and Packard Bell's interpretation includes color-coded computer cables and ports on the theory that even the novice can understand instructions like, "Plug the purple cable into the purple socket to connect your printer." (Fortune 9/5/94 p.107) SEARCHING FOR THAT PHONE NUMBER ON CD-ROM: Pro CD has published a nationwide telephone directory on CD-ROM that includes every business and residential phone number and address, compiled from every phone directory in the United States. SelectPhone's 80 million listings are accurate as of early 1994. (PC World 9/94 p.117) INFO TECH WILL EASE RETIREMENT WOES: Amid dire predictions of economic collapse once the Baby Boomer generation reaches age 65, information technology is emerging as the White Knight to the rescue. Analysts note that the increasing use of information technology in American businesses will boost productivity, and that shifting to an information-and-services economy will make it possible for workers to remain productive for much longer than was true in one dominated by factories and heavy industry. (Business eek 9/12/94 p.60) HIGH-CAPACITY FLOPPY FROM FUJI: Fuji has developed a computer 3.5-inch floppy disk that can store more 100 megabytes of data (or more than 50 times the capacity of most current disks). While storing about the same amount as magneto-optical disks, the new disks would be able to transfer data twice as fast. The disk drive developed for these floppies will not be able to read and write existing disks. (New York Times 9/10/94 p.19) "JUST ANOTHER ... ELECTRONIC WRIGGLE": "It seems to me the book has not just aesthetic values -- the charming little clothy box of the thing, the smell of the glue, even the print, which has its own beauty. But there's something about the sensation of ink on paper that is in some sense a thing, a phenomenon rather than an epiphenomenon. I can't break the association of electric trash with the computer screen. Words on the screen give the sense of being just another passing electronic wriggle," says author John Updike. (Atlantic Monthly 9/94 p.61) DOES ACADEMIA TEACH SOFTWARE ENGINEERING? The notorious software glitches in the baggage-handling system for Denver's new inter- national airport are no worse than many other failed large-scale software projects that are less well-publicized, and many computer scientists in academia seem to concede that computer science curricula tend to provide poor preparation for real-world software development. "Basic things like designing code inspections, producing user documentation and maintaining aging software are not covered in academia," says one expert. The computer as a medium fosters new forms and supports established modes of social interaction. It enables novel forms of creativity, and is used to express familiar messages. The computer-mediated communication network literally constitutes a new world, and as well a global oasis where many scholars are coming to tarry. We wish to form a scientific, refereed journal to serve these scholars. The journal seeks to publish original essays and research reports on such topics as interpersonal and group processes in communication networks, issues of privacy, economics and access raised by the developing information infrastructure, instructional communication in distance learning, computer-supported cooperative work, and organizational and social policy issues occasioned by the new medium. JCMC will be an electronic journal. Without compromising its scholarly nature, it will be distributed and become available electronically. The electronic form is intended to make the journal more accessible and affordable, emphasize its global appeal, and broaden the bandwidth in which its content is offered. The networked form will emphasize the dynamic nature of research, by accelerating the editorial and production process, and by encouraging reader- editor-reviewer-author interaction. Although electronic information services that focus on journalistic or cartographic approaches to CMC currently exist, our effort, we believe, is different. Here the purpose is to use the CMC process and medium as meeting grounds and outlet for scholarly work on the topic. Such work has been scattered in over half a dozen disciplines with no home of its own. We intend to build such a home. JCMC will be distributed as a hypermedia document on the World Wide Web at: http://cwis.usc.edu/dept/annenberg/announce.html http://www.huji.ac.il/www_jcmc/announce.html JCMC may be accessed as plain text through the following gopher URL: gopher://cwis.usc.edu:70/11/University_Information/ Academic_Departments/Annenberg/J_Computer-Mediated_Communication. Methodological and logistical issues of how to set up cross-cultural research projects were discussed. This year, we have planned a meeting consisting of the presentation of research-in-progress papers followed by a roundtable with experts in the field. The choice of research-in-progress papers was made by the group which attended last year's meeting with the objective of encouraging discussion of problems that (1) may not be yet completely solved at presentation time and (2) are likely to be pervasive to most cross-cultural research projects. The roundtable will have a semi-structured format, including both previously submitted issues by the meeting participants and ad hoc discussion. The meeting is planned for Saturday, December 17, 1994 from 12:30 to 5:30 pm. A light lunch and a coffee break are planned. To limit bandwidth use, this is a summarized version of the meeting invitation. More detailed information is available from Roberto Evaristo . Space is limited on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please let me know as soon as possible whether you would be interested in attending the meeting.
