The Calendar grew large rapidly and during the past few months I have included the full Calendar in occasional issues -- usually during a "slow week" -- with an abbreviated Calendar in all issues. Now the size of the Calendar and the lack of any slow weeks forces me to consider alternatives. Plans are in the works to put the calendar somewhere on the Internet with an INFOSYS pointer to it. However, until those plans are realised I will be issuing the Calendar of Upcoming Events in a separate Calendar issue approximately the first of each month. These issues won't have regular v#n# attached to them. The first one, September Calendar, will be issued early next week. A special plug for my "Request for Assistance" below. Do not miss my draft list of e-mail lists of interest to IS and do write to me if your favourite list isn't there. This is the start of something big that the IS community has been needing for several months: Information Systems Resources on the Net. \EOA 0265* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NEWS - From EDUPAGE * * Dennis Viehland, Massey University (d.viehland@massey.ac.nz) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * E-FORMS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS: Companies with more than 500 employees typically spend between $94 billion and $120 billion per year on some 1,210 different paper forms. Fortunately, electronic forms -- accessed, filled out, and filed online -- are making a dent in the paper chase, and BIS Strategic Decisions predicts a 118% increase in the average number of e-forms processed each month between 1993 and 1996 (compared with 4% for paper). (Information Week 8/8/94 p.42) DATA-MINING IS THE NEXT BIG THING FOR SUPERCOMPUTERS: Big credit card companies, banks, airlines and insurers have discovered massively parallel processing in an effort to divine which consumers are likely to buy what products and when. A Gartner Group VP predicts sales of parallel systems could expand tenfold to $5 billion by 1998 as a result of this new application. While marketing folks are waxing euphoric, one business professor warns the fallout could be nasty if companies start abusing their newfound info: "The companies doing this have a big responsibility. Otherwise there will be an information Chernobyl." (Wall Street Journal 8/16/94 B1) LOTUS LITE: Lotus Development Corp. is working on a desktop or "lite" version of its Notes software. The new product will be geared toward users who need Notes only for collaborating with co-workers and don't want to pay for many of the other features in the program. The desktop Notes could cost less than half of the $300 now commonly charged for the full-fledged version. (Wall Street Journal 8/16/94 B2) IBM PLANS ELECTRONIC SOFTWARE DELIVERY: IBM is planning a service that will allow customers to order, receive and distribute software over its IBM Global Network. The company is also looking into delivering software through online services such as Prodigy, the Internet, and through advanced digital satellite technology. (Investor's Business Daily 8/17/94 A7) SOFTWARE SALES STATISTICS: First quarter sales figures from the Software Publishers Association indicate that compared to first quarter a year ago sales of programs written for Windows are up 43%, for DOS down by 32, for Macintosh up 17%. Overall, the biggest jump in a program category was home education software, up 127%; next was entertainment software, up 57%. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution 8/18/94 E2) Editor's Note: Edupage, a summary of news items on information technology, is a service of Educom. This is my attempt to identify the most important Net resources (e-mail lists, e-publications, WWW sites, gophers, etc) for the global Information Systems community. More on ISRN as it emerges. Before the Web, before Gopher, and virtually before anything else was electronic mailing lists. By most reckonings they are still the dominant information exchange medium for Internet-connected IS professionals. (Single e-mail messages are the obvious exception.) For the past 10 months I have been following a large number of e-mail lists and I have compiled this "list of lists". I need your help to confirm that this is a complete and accurate list. If you are aware of an e-mail list not on this list, please write to me with relevant details (list name, list owner, purpose, etc). Please note that the purpose of ISRN forces me to be somewhat brutal in what lists to include. Lists oriented toward computer science topics, campus computing, vendors, and regional lists are not included. Given these comments, if you feel I am missing an important list of interest to the global IS community, please write. Similarly if you disagree with the inclusion of an e-mail list here, please write to tell me so. If an e-mail list here strikes your interest and you are tempted to write to ask me for more information, please don't. Complete information about these lists will be available shortly and I cannot spend a lot of time responding to individual requests. If you are a listowner/moderator of one of these lists, a verification survey will follow shortly. Since the early nineties many companies have spent more on communication and computing gear than on industrial equipment and machinery. As the impact of information technology on the structure and performance of economic organizations is intensifying, research activities in information systems and economics is becoming increasingly important. To help consolidate the leading research of the community working at the intersection of these expanding areas, we are planning a special issue of Management Science devoted to "Frontier Research on Information Systems and Economics". Papers are sought on information systems and economics, including the following: --Information systems and the theory of the firm: coordination, control, monitoring and incentives; information costs and the efficiency of markets, hierarchies and other forms of organizing; coordination theory; --Information networks economics: externalities, innovation, multimedia support policies, competitive service pricing models; --Information systems management: outsourcing, estimation of software development costs, capacity allocation, decentralization and client-server systems; --Strategic applications: impact on industries and individual firms, search costs, entry barriers, business process reengineering, switching costs; --Economics and information technology: compatibility and standards, new products and services, functionality and cost trends, strategic alliances; --Econometric models and findings: determining the value of information systems; productivity impact, technological and organizational interfaces; --Current topics in economics and information systems: the information infrastructure and marketplace; computer-supported cooperative work; property rights to software, data and encoded knowledge, including institutional and technological approaches. Empirical papers are especially encouraged for this special issue. Papers will be judged in part on their potential impact on management practice. Manuscripts must not be more than 32 double-spaced pages including tables and figures, 12 pt. font, and normal margins. The deadline for the special issue has been changed to December 31, 1994. Five copies of the paper, including a detachable cover page with the name(s), affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s), should be sent to either of the guest editors: Prof. Erik Brynjolfsson Sloan School of Management Massachusetts Institute of Technology E53-313 30 Wadsworth Street Cambridge, MA 02139 USA E-mail: brynjolfsson@mit.edu Prof. Abraham Seidmann W.E. Papers from a variety of perspectives are solicited. We are particularly interested in longitudinal, comparative and/or contextual studies of organizational change(s) that integrate theory with original empirical research. Such studies could use -- but are not limited to -- ethnographic, historical, survey, network, or semiotic methods. We are interested in the social processes associated with, altered by and/or produced from technology-based organizational changes. The phrase 'information technology' will be interpreted broadly. Relevant information technologies include voice mail systems, cellular telephones, various imaging devices, automated information storage, retrieval and use programs, networking arrangements, and so forth. Specific studies may look at either contemporary or historical cases of organizational change, and may focus on how technology is shaped by organization(s) as well as how technology shapes organization(s). These studies might examine strategically initiated change based on new uses (and alleged benefits) of information technology, or they might study planned and emergent changes associated with the introduction of information technology into organization(s). Relevant types of transformations include (but are not limited to) structural and cultural changes within organizations or in relations between/among organizations. Institutional level studies are encouraged, as are studies examining changes in traditional work practices within a given organization, sector and/or field. Inquiries are welcome.
