Keynote speaker Niels Bjorn Anderson from Copenhagen Business School presented some very interesting case studies about IT Policy in developing countries, as well as painting a perspective of the organisation of the future. Some 30 papers were presented on a range of topics from the technical to the social, and these are available as published proceedings. A limited number of the 1993 Botswana conference proceedings are also still available. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing copies for your library. Its success relies on international cooperation in information collection and exchange. Recently, new information technology such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) has dramatically changed the way environ- mental data can be managed and exchanged. The purpose of this symposium is to bring people together to share their experience in environmental information management and explore proper ways in which environmental data can be shared to improve decision effectiveness. The specific goals of the symposium include: --Promoting environmental information exchange internationally using EDI and other technologies --Exploring methods, technologies, and issues related to the collection and management of environmental information --Facilitating the formation of an international association for environmental electronic data interchange. Instructions for Contributors --Contributors are encouraged to submit an abstract before submitting the full paper. Two copies of the abstract should be submitted to the program coordinator. The abstract should have a separate cover page showing the title of the paper, the authors, their affiliations, and the mailing address, phone number, fax number and e-mail address (if available) of the corresponding author. --The abstract should be no more than three double spaced pages. It should state the theme of the paper, the major content, and its findings/suggestions. --Authors of the accepted abstracts will be asked to submit the full paper. Detailed guidelines for preparing the full paper will be given with the acceptance letter. --Please send all submissions to the following coordinators: US and Canada Asia and other areas Dr. James S.C. It specialises in the provision of high quality post graduate and post experience management develop- ment through degree and short courses, as well as applied research and consultancy services. Our approach to management education is to balance academic rigour with practical application. The Information Systems Group has long had a reputation for excellence in IS research and teaching and works in close partnership with industry, commerce and government. The research effort is currently focused on business process re-engineering, benefits management, supply chain information management and the international management of IS. The Group is seeking applicants from suitably qualified persons with research interests closely aligned to its own. It is envisaged that the position would be filled by a current academic who wishes to spend up to six months at a leading European business school. The department of Computer Science at Manchester University is seeking to appoint a Reader in Information Systems. This is an important appointment for us. It is a key move in a strategy to develop information systems (IS) as a subject of research and scholarship in the department. The rank of Reader represents a senior position in the British system, somewhere between associate professor and professor in the North American hierarchy. The appointee will be expected to have a strong record in research and will be expected to play a leading role in the development of our IS research activity. Currently, there are two main IS-related research groups in the department. One, led by Dr. Alan Rector, specialises in medical informatics. The interests of the second group (the Informatics Process Group led by Prof. Brian Warboys) are in the area of process modelling and business process redesign. The department itself is broadly-based with active research in many areas of computer science (formal methods, architectures, software engineering, HCI, AI) and has been consistently rated as "top grade" in research assessment exercises. Manchester generally has considerable strengths in IS. There are IS groups at neighbouring institutions such as Salford University (Trevor Wood-Harper et al) and UMIST (Peri Loucopoulis), and in other departments in the University (e.g. accounting). To apply send a CV to: Professor Warboys Dept of Computer Science Manchester University Oxford Road, Manchester, U.K. The closing date is 31 July 1994. Further particulars and an official application form can be obtained from the Registrar, Manchester University, Oxford Road, Manchester, U.K. \EOA 0247* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALENDAR OF UPCOMING EVENTS * * Dennis W.
