The inaugural article is from the current issue of Information Systems Research (ISR). The ISR editor, John King, is posting article summaries and editorial notes from ISR in selected lists (eg, icis-l@uga.cc.uga.edu) and USENET newsgroups (e.g., sci.op-research, comp.infosystems). With his permission, INFOSYS will carry these contents each quarter. I would be happy to deal with demands for equal coverage from other IS journal editors. Subscriber comments about INFOSYS coverage is always welcome. INFOSYS subscribers who are not members of the CASE-L discussion list and who tried to obtain the CASE-L log9405 file mentioned in INFOSYS v1 n24 would have received a "you are not authorized" message. You must be a CASE-L member to access the archives. To get the file, send this three-line message to listserv@ucop.edu: subscribe CASE-L yourfirstname yourlastname get CASE-L log9405 unsubscribe CASE-L This last command is, of course, optional. I also must note a correction...in article 188 (v1 n23) the e-mail address in the header was incorrect (but a correct address was in the article itself). INFOSYS readers who want additional information about the upcoming Australasian Conference on Information Systems should contact Karen Young at kyoung@ponderosa.is.monash.edu.au. \EOA 0201* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NEWS - From EDUPAGE * * Dennis Viehland, Massey University (d.viehland@massey.ac.nz) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * MAINFRAMES BY MAIL: IBM's mailed 40,000 copies of its new mainframe catalogue, Mainframe Direct. Microsoft will pay Stac $1 million a month for the next 43 months for copying its data compression technology, and the two companies will cross-license all of their disk compression patents over the next five years. (Investor's Business Daily 6/22/94 A13) TRIMMING INFORMATION SYSTEMS COSTS: A study reported in PC Week (June 20) identifies ways that six organizations trimmed their total information systems costs by 20% to 80%. Key factors included: using and/or customizing shrink-wrapped software, thereby reducing end-user support staff; outsourcing maintenance of old applications, freeing in-house staff to concentrate on new technologies; and securing commitment from top-down line-management. (Investor's Business Daily 6/23/94 A4) TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING -- E-MAIL OVERLOAD: CEOs and other Very Important People are suffering from e-mail overload, and some are requesting to be contacted by more conventional methods, because they no longer attempt to handle their e-mail backlog. "E-mail is a powerful tool to promote communication and flatten hierarchies. But what nobody wants to admit is that people in an organization have different amounts of power and status. And that those who are better off want to restore a degree of isolation," says Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Langdon Winner. And it's not just the top dogs that are overwhelmed -- the chairman of Computer Associates shuts down the company's e-mail system five hours a day so that everyone can get their real work done. An important part of my research is to survey participatory design methods used in development of computer-based systems by organizations in different countries. A summary of results from the questionnaire will be available to all participants. The results from the survey will be very useful for developers, because it will assist developers with selecting participatory design methods which are appropriate for their own development requirements. If you are using Participatory Design in any way at all, I would be very grateful if you would contact me, so that I can send a copy of the questionnaire to you. Should you agree to participate, you can be assured that your name and that of your organization will be help in the strictest confidence. However, the links between these two tracks are now becoming increasingly important due to the rapid advances in information technology and the growing outreach of OR to solve practical problems in a variety of disciplines. The links essentially address two broad developmental issues: providing effective information system support for practical OR applications, and providing efficient OR modelling support in configuring optimal information systems. These issues can be broadly summarized as "Systems for Models" and "Models of Systems," respectively. To help consolidate the leading research of the community working at these interface links, we are planning a volume of Annals of OR devoted to these topics. Papers are sought on Systems for Models or Models of Systems, including, but not restricted to the following: OR Models for: --Systems Analysis and Design --Database Systems Design and configuration --IS management problems including IS project management, IS strategies and IS Economic Analyses --System Architecture Design including client/server, wide- area/internet and other system configurations --Emerging facets of IS such as Multimedia/Hypertext, process Reengineering, Groupware, Logic/AI Applications and others. IS Support for: --production planning/scheduling/control models --pricing/resource allocation/distribution models --investment/cost analysis/other financial models --strategic management models The deadline for submission is March 15, 1995.
