The Easyreach 700 Service will cost $10 to get a number, then $7 a month, plus the cost of calls made. (Miami Herald 5/18/94 C3) RECYCLING TECHNOLOGY: A student group at Pennsylvania State University has found a new use for old computers. They donate them to elementary and secondary schools in rural and inner-city areas. The group makes sure the units are in working condition and that compatible machines are shipped to each location. (Chronicle of Higher Educ 5/18/94 A19) PASSWORD PRIMER: The Computer Law Association has some advice on choosing passwords. Don't choose any word in the dictionary, or one that relates to you personally (i.e., birth dates, license plate numbers, etc.). Do use a password with at least eight characters that has a mix of numbers, upper-and lower-case letters, and if possible special characters such as &$@*. (Bottom Line Personal 6/1/94 p.8) AMERICANS LIKE TECHNOLOGY: Almost one of every three households has a personal computer, and 65% of computer users say they would miss their machine "a lot" if they no longer had it. The study, which was done by Times Mirror Center for the People and the Press, also found that people with computers spend less time watching TV entertainment. "Computer Life" will cover computer hardware and software dos and don'ts, and "Family PC" will team Ziff with Walt Disney Co. to cover the same topics from a child's point of view. "Our studies show that people are into computers for two reasons: themselves or their kids," says Apple's consumer marketing manager. Both titles are due out this fall. Applicants should submit a proposal, limited to 15 double-spaced pages of text, by September 12, 1994. The proposal should develop the theory and method for the proposed research. The applicant's dissertation adviser should also submit a nominating letter certifying that the applicant has been admitted to candidacy and is likely to complete the dissertation research in 1995. Students expected to complete the dissertation before 1995 are not eligible. Each university department may nominate an unlimited number of students for the award, but no more than two students from any university may be selected as finalists. Ten finalists will be invited to present their research in a workshop on Sunday, October 23, 1994. At the workshop, finalists will have an opportunity to get detailed feedback from a panel of expert organizational scholars. There will also be opportunities for informal discussion with panel members and other finalists. The winners of the award will be selected and announced at the end of the workshop. The student with the best dissertation proposal will receive a $500 award and the runner-up will receive a $250 award. All finalists will receive a free one-year subscription to Organization Science. Conference members will have the opportunity to explore the ways in which electronic communication affects their roles and ability to work within and between groups. The conference will also provide opportunities to increase members' understanding of the ways in which use of computers may affect the exercise of authority and leadership in organizations. The conference is designed as a temporary educational institution. Different types of events, varying in size, task and authority structure, provide opportunities for members to examine the immediate "here and now" of the conference as it unfolds. Some events are also designed to give participants time to review and reflect on conference learning. An Introduction to Computing Resources will be held on the first day of the conference to introduce all conference members to the electronic network and mail system that will be used during the conference. REGISTRATION: Pre-registration is required. Call 217-333-2880 or e-mail lynn_padilla@ceps.uiuc.edu for a complete brochure. FEES A fee of $390, including registration and meals, will be charged for those registering by June 15, 1994. The conference fee after that date is $425. A limited number of scholarships are available and must be received by June 15, 1994. \EOA 0171* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALL FOR PAPERS - East-West Conference, Info Technology Design * * John Grogan (j.grogan@lmu.ac.uk) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * East-West Conference Information Technology Design 5-9 September 1994 International Centre for Scientific and Technical Information Moscow, Russia CONFERENCE AIMS: The conference is concerned with the creative human activity of designing artifacts such as systems, structures, machines and a variety of objects. It aims to reconsider an important question: How could we use information technology (IT) to enhance human creativity and improve the effectiveness of designers? The conference will build upon achievements and learn from limitations of current systems. Examples of important questions which we shall discuss in Moscow include: --Why is it that we do not know how to employ information technology at the conceptual stage of design when a major creative effort is required? --Do we know how to support concurrent engineering (i.e., teams of designers from a variety of disciplines co-operating on the development of new products with customers and marketing specialists)? --What is the best way of using IT to aid the strategic evolution of products, i.e. designing products that can evolve with the changing requirements of customers? Conference Language: Abstracts and papers should be written in English. Presentations can be made in English or in Russian. Professional interpreters will be available for sequential interpreting during the conference. The deadline for abstracts/papers is 30 May 1994. Different-time/different-place/different culture workgroups will become the norm. This emerging paradigm of office work gives rise to numerous questions. What are these issues? What design options or solution strategies exist to address these issues? How might these design options be best implemented? What are their implications? The aim of this workshop is to surface, discuss and synthesize such specific issues in three different areas: --IT platform requirements (global telecommunications, IS infrastructure) --Business systems and processes (methods, models, and tools for process design and implementation in organizations) --Social and political implications (the impact of international- ization and global communications on organizations, policy, multi-cultural team productivity, etc.) A monograph of presented papers will serve as the basis for future IFIP WG8.4 events on "IOF: Design options and solution strategies" (Arizona, April 1996) and "IOF: Studies in practice" (a global multi-site conference, September 1997). CFP: The session will be organized around 8 position papers presented and discussed in four 90 minute sessions. We need short (6 page or so) and crisp (but not flimsy) statements that point out one or more specific problem areas that are relevant to the objective of making the International Office really happen. The papers need not be well-wrought scientific articles, but should not ignore previous work, either. Vision combined with healthy criticism is what we look for.
