"Putting the Information Infrastructure to Work" predicts the new data highway will improve the competitiveness of the U.S. manufacturing base; speed the efficiency of electronic commerce and business-to- business communications; improve health care delivery and help contain medical costs; promote access to the educational system; and enable government to dispense services to the public faster, more responsively and more efficiently. (BNA Daily Report for Executives 5/5/94 A10) DIGITAL EQUIPMENT TO CUT JOBS AND COSTS: Digital Equipment Corporation will cut at least 20,000 people from its workforce in order to cut costs and achieve profitability. It aims to end up with 85,000 employees, or half of the number it had at the peak employment level in 1989. (New York Times 5/7/94 p.19) THE SENSE OF A WOMAN: Women love the geometric video game Tetris, and game-makers are dying to find out why. While 99% of the buyers for most other games are male, 40% of Tetris buyers are female. One theory is the appeal of the game's goal, which is to bring order to chaos, resulting in neat little rows of geometric shapes. Women crave order, hypothesizes a sociologist hired by Nintendo to unravel the riddle, and by beating the clock on the game, a woman experiences a rush of endorphins -- "feel good" chemicals produced by the body under stress. (Wall Street Journal 5/10/94 B1) WOMEN FAVOR E-MAIL OVER E-MALL: A survey conducted by an online publication reveals that more than 66% of the women surveyed log on to an electronic service at least once a day and the same number spends at least $20 a month on online fees. Top on their list is interacting with editors, writers and other readers, with Internet access ranking second. Only 6% considered shopping, banking or travel services a priority. (Tampa Tribune 5/9/94 B&F3) INTERNET TOP TEN BEST-SELLING BOOKS: CPU Publishing Update says the top ten best-selling books on the Internet are: 1. Whole Internet User's Guide (Krol); 2. The Internet Complete Reference (Hahn and Stout); 3. Internet for Dummies (Levine); 4. Mac Internet Tour Guide (Ventana); 5. Complete Internet Directory (Braun); 6. The Internet Companion Plus (LaQuey); 7. Internet Starter Kit for the Mac (Hayden); 8. The Internet Navigator (Glister); 9. (Internet Business Report May 94 p.5) Editor's note: A 2nd edition of Krol is due out now; should be worth waiting for (O'Reilly and Associates; ISBN 1-56592-063-5; US$24.95; jane@ora.com). \EOA 0156* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ANNOUNCEMENT - Center for Information Technology and Management * * Arie Segev, Univ of Calif-Berkeley (citm@isr.berkeley.edu) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Center for Information Technology and Management (CITM) Walter A Haas School of Business University of California-Berkeley This new Center has been created to provide a focal point for research programs, curricular development, and educational offerings for the university and business communities. The establishment of the Center reflects the Haas School's emphasis on technology management in general, and information technology management in particular. The center is directed by Professor Arie Segev and sponsored by major corporations, including Bank of America, The Gap, McKesson, MCI, Oracle, and Pacific Bell. The list of sponsors is expected to grow significantly in a short time. CITM will exercise leadership in the academic and business communities by influencing three key groups: organizations using information and communication technology, consultants, and government regulators. The mission of CITM is to foster inter- disciplinary learning and collaboration which will assist organizations to: (1) understand and manage the impact of emerging technologies, and (2) strategically utilize that understanding to gain competitive advantage and develop productive, creative workplaces. Connectivity and the management of technology-driven change are the initial research agenda of the CITM. Subject areas include the information super-highway and related issues; The design, deployment and management of quick response infrastructure to support changing business strategy and related application needs; Effect of IT-based industry process re-engineering on supply chains (e.g. "fiber to retail" in the apparel industry); and Strategic data management issues in a global environment (quality, accessibility, security, enterprise and inter-enterprise integration, etc.) (Editor's Note: a position announcement for this new Center is included in this issue) \EOA 0157* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ANNOUNCEMENT - IFIP Working Group 8.2 Gopher Service * * R Baskerville, Binghamton U (rbask@bingsuns.cc.binghamton.edu) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Material relating to current work of WG 8.2 (Working Group on Information Systems and Organizations) is now available through gopher.
