As information and media are digitized, businesses and media companies have a clear and present need to understand the capabilities, problems, opportunities, and challenges presented by digital media. This symposium addresses strategic issues in: --Business: What is the business experience with the new multimedia market? What are the right products and services? What are effective development, distribution and market strategies required to succeed in this market? --Technology: What are the enabling technologies in multimedia, fiber optics, bandwidth compression, wireless networks, digital television, semiconductors, and user interfaces? What is the state-of-the-art and what can we expect in the future? --Policy and Regulation: What public policy questions need to be addressed, such as privacy, copyright, convergence of distribution channels, and universality of access? Where are the lines drawn between public good and private gain? The keynote speakers are Koichiro Hayashi (NTT America) and Arno Penzias (AT&T Bell Laboratories). The symposium is sponsored by The Center for Research on Information Systems and The Center for Digital Multimedia at New York University In addition to the traditional proceedings, we will produce a CD-ROM which will comprise the talks and presentations, including text, graphics, and photographs, as well as audio and video segments. REGISTRATION: The cost of the conference, refreshments at break, a cocktail reception and conference materials is $500 ($250 for full- time faculty and students). Space is limited. Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Such integration can be represented by --KBS which use DM front-ends to provide a more effective mechanism for acquiring user input --KBS which utilize DM to generate more effective presentations of advice and conclusions --DM systems with embedded intelligence (intelligent multimedia tutorials, etc.) --other hybrid hardware/software architectures. Papers can be theoretical or practical, but should appeal to a broad audience. Potential topics might include (but are not limited to) an analysis of the synergy between the two technologies, the presentation of success factors for implementing DM/KBS systems, or a general framework for addressing integrated DM/KBS systems. Papers might also identify target applications or discuss the implementation of actual DM/KBS integrated systems. Papers which present fielded systems should include a discussion of the lessons learned from the knowledge engineering process.
