The company is now adopting parallel processing as part of its mainframe strategy; since the new systems will be able to existing IBM mainframe software, the strategy may give IBM an advantage over makers of parallel processors who offer customers less software to choose from. (Washington Post 4/6/94 D5) PEOPLE OR MACHINES: Human-centered information technology managers concentrate on people rather than machines. For example, machine- oriented managers assume permanence of solutions; people-oriented managers assume transience of solutions. (Harvard Business Review 3/4 94 p.119) GROUP ACTIVITIES: Competition in the groupware market is heating up. The current leader is Lotus Notes, a software program that allows people to collaborate over networks on such things as electronic meetings, project report-writing, and analysis of sales tracking systems. But Microsoft and Novell are both entering the battle. Microsoft's entry will offer enhanced mail services, and is reportedly working with AT&T to develop its own public network deal. Novell, which is acquiring WordPerfect, is pursuing an arrangement with MCI and will offer document management over Novell's networking software. Microsoft and Novell will attempt to leverage their dominance in desktop and network systems; Lotus will emphasize its ability to work with a variety of operating systems. May the best team win.
