All three will have a microphone and will feature IBM's personal dictation system, allowing spoken English to be translated into text on the screen. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution 3/31/94 F2) SUN SLASHES PRICES: Sun Microsystems has slashed prices on its new line of workstations by as much as 50%, fending off competition from increasingly powerful PCs capable of delivering similar performance at a much lower price. "They've put themselves in a nice, aggressive position," notes a computer analyst for Prudential Securities. (Wall Street Journal 3/30/94 B5) RECORD SOFTWARE SALES: The Software Publishers Association says North American software sales set a record high last year, up to $6.81 billion, an 18.4% increase from 1992. (Atlanta Journal- Constitution 3/31/94) IBM'S NEW DISK DRIVE: IBM has unveiled a 3.5-inch optical disk drive with 80% more storage capacity than the models currently on the market. The drive, which stores, reads and writes optical disks for computers, will be available in small quantities in April, with prices starting at $700. (Miami Herald 3/30/94 C3) CIO SURVEY RESULTS: A survey of 400 chief information officers (CIOs) found a more than fivefold increase in the number of systems running on client-server networks -- 27% in 1993, up from 5% in both 1991 and 1992. The percentage is expected to rise to 57% by 1995. The survey also showed information systems budgets were fairly static, rising only 0.4% last year after a 3% increase in 1991 and a 3.5% increase in 1992. (Investor's Business Daily 3/31/94 p.4) INTERACTIVE VODKA: Yes, TBWA Advertising is selling a $30 diskette that consists mainly of multimedia ads for Absolut Vodka and that includes paintings of Absolut Vodka bottles by Andy Warhol and other artist. The program should be of interest to multimedia lovers, art lovers, and vodka lovers. The list is a free service which is offered by the IDSSs laboratory in the School of Computing Sciences at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). IDSSs have proven to be successful at supporting complex decision making problems at all levels of an organisation. Although there has been a large amount of research work in building IDSSs, there has been few conferences, workshops, discussion groups and interest groups established for IDSSs. We hope that this mailing list will serve as a discussion group for IDSSs, which can be used as a media for sharing ideas and for the creation of conferences and workshops. To subscribe to the IDSS mailing list, send e-mail to listproc@socs.uts.edu.au with the following line as the first and only line in the body of the message: subscribe IDSS [your-full-name] Do not include the brackets when specifying your full name. Technical papers, panels, vendor presentations, and tutorials that address the application of computer security and safety technologies in the civil, defense, and commercial environments are solicited. Selected papers, panels, and presentations will be those that present examples of in-place or attempted solutions to these problems in real applications; lessons learned; and original research, analyses, and approaches for defining the computer security issues and problems. Of particular interest are papers, panels, and presentations that present descriptions of secure systems in use or under development, general strategy, methodologies for analyzing the scope and nature of integrated computer security issues, and potential solutions. Papers written by students will be judged for a Best Student Paper Award. Completed papers as well as proposals for panels, vendor presentations, and tutorials must be received by May 31, 1994. The workshop will be held at the ICIS conference hotel and followed by a dinner. In addition to the usual Working Group business, IFIP 8.2 plans to allocate ample time for open discussion of topics that relate to the Working Group Theme, namely Information Systems and Organizations. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: --New organizational forms --Organizational implementation --Impacts of IT on workplace and society. --Behavioral aspects of IT adaptation and diffusion --Behavioral aspects of systems development --Organizational and high level models of IS --Interactions between formal and informal aspects in systems design and use --IT and gender --Organizational interfaces We anticipate having presentations on works-in-progress (no more than 20 minutes each) and panel sessions (approximately 45 minutes). As there are numerous other venues for presenting finished papers such proposals will not be accepted. We also seek wide participation from the audience. Therefore, some time will be devoted to small groups brainstorming and proposals for brainstorming topics are invited. Submission information: A proposal for a presentation or panel should include the presenter's full name, address, e-mail address or fax and telephone number for rapid reply. Proposals are requested by 1 October 1994. E-mail submissions are encouraged; otherwise, please provide a paper and diskette copy of the text. The proposal length should be proportional to the time requested, but in no event longer than 3 pages. Selected presenters will be contacted by 15 November 1994. All abstracts received will be distributed by e-mail in advance of the workshop and on paper at the time of the workshop. For more information, to submit a proposal, or to register for the dinner (Canadian $25 for Chinese banquet) please contact: Kevin Crowston Michigan Business School 701 Tappan Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1234 USA Fax: +1 (313) 763-5688 E-mail: crowston@umich.edu \EOA 0123* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALL FOR PAPERS - Model Formulation (Decision Support Systems) * * Andrew B. Whinston, University of Texas (abw@emx.cc.utexas.edu) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Call for Papers Decision Support Systems: An International Journal Special Issue on Model Formulation: Theory, Process, and Support Systems A model is an abstract representation of the essentials of a real world phenomenon. The process of model formulation points out significant elements of the real world problems, their salient interrelationships needed to construct a model, and procedures. The process of model formulation is ill-structured and complex. Current research suggests that the model formulation process inherently is an integrated process that uses a multitude of concepts such as planning, case-based reasoning, reason maintenance, opportunistic control, database management, distributed artificial intelligence, and even computer language theory. TOPICS OF INTEREST Given the complexity of the model formulation process, the study of formulating models is fast becoming an area by itself. Papers dealing with issues related to understanding the model formulation process, to developing architectures to support the process, and to investigating the theory of model formulation are appropriate. A variety of model formulation work will be considered for this special issue including applied, empirical, and theoretical. The topics include, but are not limited to the following: --development of model formulation theory --cognitive models for the model formulation process --collaborative model formulation support --design and development of model formulation --support systems using artificial intelligence and/or database management systems --software engineering issues in model formulation support design --integrated cognitive architecture --model formulation and corporate memory --model formulation language --routine formulation versus creative formulation SUBMISSION One page abstract may be sent (is not required) prior to August 31, 1994 if authors are concerned about the relevancy of the paper to the special issue. Full paper submissions will follow the standard referring process. Interested contributors should submit five copies to the guest editors: Professor Arun Sen and Professor Ajay Vinze Department of Business Analysis and Research College of Business Administration and Graduate School of Business Texas A&M University College Station, Texas 77843-4217 USA Phone: 409-845-8370 Fax: 409-845-5653 E-mail: sen@tamvm1.tamu.edu or vinze@tamvm1.tamu.edu IMPORTANT DATES: Full paper due (5 copies): August 31, 1994 Notice of review results: November 30, 1994 Final paper due: January 31, 1995 \EOA 0124* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALENDAR OF UPCOMING EVENTS * * Dennis W.
