It's the first such system to serve an entire airport, the first to be run by distributed desktop computers, and the first to use radio links. Despite his woes, the contractor says the project's worth it: "Who would turn down a $193 million contract? You'd expect to have a little trouble for that kind of money." (New York Times 3/18/94 C1) AT&T AND LOTUS JOIN FORCES: AT&T and Lotus Development Corp. will offer AT&T Network Notes, a new electronic service designed for on-line conferencing, browsing for information in text or video form, and performing financial transactions. Lotus's CEO called the planned service "the business Internet," and investors envision a product that goes far beyond what current on-line services offer. (Wall Street Journal 3/18/94 B2) BEST JOBS IN AMERICA: According to Money magazine, computer analysts have the best jobs in America. Ranking 100 jobs in terms of earnings, long- and short-term job growth, job security, prestige rating, and "stress and strain" rating, the magazine says the top ten jobs are computer systems analyst, physician, physical therapist, electrical engineer, civil engineer, pharmacist, psychologist, geologist, high school teacher, school principal. Budget cutting at colleges and universities took a toll on some of the scientific careers that dominated the list two years ago. (Money 3/94 p.70) THE VIRTUAL WORKFORCE: Bell Atlantic has expanded telecommuting from a trial of 100 managers three years ago to an option for all 16,000 of its management people, and CEO Ray Smith says the company is working with the union to "open the option as much as possible to our 50,000 associates." (The Futurist Mar/Apr 94 p.13) THE REAL COST OF COMPUTING: A Gartner Group analyst says a company's real cost of PC ownership is US$6K to US$12K a year, which takes into account technical and administrative support, as well as the lost time of high-paid nontechnical persons tutoring themselves or others when regular technical support is inadequate. It is argued that the excessive preoccupation with technology has blinded organisations to the actual business issues. The real problems are human, management, social and organisational ones." (Ian Angell and Steve Smithson, Information Systems Management). This conference aims to identify the key issues with respect to Information Technology and organisational change. Furthermore, solutions are suggested, based both on practical experience and academic research. The programme structure and the blend of speakers are the best indication of the multidisciplinary approach of the theme. CONFERENCE FEE covering attendance, conference material, reception, lunches (no accommodation) is $600 for two days. Attendance for the first day only is $450, for the second day only is $250. To optimise the objectives and design of the conference, there is a planned maximum of 60 participants. Enrollment can only be ensured if the appropriate conference fee is received by 20 April, 1994. Yet the goal of improving software quality and productivity remains an elusive one. This conference aims to bring together researchers and practitioners who are interested in the efficient production of quality software, so that views across a variety of issues may be exchanged and a rich perspective on quality and productivity may be obtained. ICSQP 94' is sponsored by IFIP WG3.4 and 5.4, Software Quality Institute (Australia), Hong Kong Computer Society, and City Polytechnic of Hong Kong. SCOPE: The conference welcomes contributions in areas of theory, practice, education and training, from (but not restricted to) the following fields: --software process modelling --software process improvement --process assessments --international standards (e.g. ISO, BS, AS, TQM, etc.) --software product quality specification and evaluation --software metrics and measurements --requirements modelling and analysis --software engineering environments --software reuse and re-engineering SUBMISSION INFORMATION: Potential contributors are invited to register immediately with the Program Committee Co-chair (ismatlee@cphkvx.cphk.hk) their intention to contribute a paper. Four copies of the manuscript (maximum 8 pages) should be submitted to: Dr. Matthew Lee ICSQP 94' Programme Committee Co-Chair Dept of Information Systems City Polytechnic of Hong Kong 83 Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Hong Kong Tel: +852 788 7348 Fax: +852 788 8694 E-mail: ismatlee@cphkvx.cphk.hk Submissions should include a separate title page specifying the title, all authors with their affiliations, abstract (maximum 200 words), up to 10 keywords, and the address of the contact author, including a telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address (if available). The title page should also be submitted by e-mail (in plain text) or fax to the ismatlee@cphkvx.cphk.hk to facilitate submission processing. IMPORTANT DATES: Registration of intention to submit Now Deadline for receipt of papers 15 May 1994 Notification of acceptance 15 July 1994 Deadline for camera-ready copies 15 Sept 1994 All papers will be submitted to a standard refereeing process. Information Systems Track Hawaii Internation Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 28) January 3-6, 1995 Maui, Hawaii The purpose of the HICSS conference is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas, research results, development activities, and applications among academicians and practitioners in computer- based system sciences. The conference consists of tutorials, advanced seminars, presentations of accepted papers, open forums, task forces, plenary and distinguished guest lectures. There is a high degree of interaction and discussion among the conference participants because the conference is conducted in a workshop-like setting. It has 4 major tracks: Information Systems, Computer Architecture, Software Technology and Biotechnology Computing. The Information Systems Track is divided into three themes and various minitracks that focus on specific research areas: Collaboration Systems and Technology: --Group Support Systems --Distributed Communication Systems --Organizational Memory --Geographic Information Systems --GSS Applications & User Experiences --Negotiation Support Systems --Telework: The Borderless Organization --Electronic Support for Learning --Business Process Re-engineering Decision Support and Knowledge-Based Systems --Forecasting Support Systems --Graph-Based Methods for Analyzing Systems and Organizations --Information Sharing and Knowledge Discovery in Large Scientific Databases --Technology Management: Systems --Hypermedia in Organizations and Systems --Emerging Paradigm for Intelligent Systems --Executive Information Systems --Modeling Technologies and Information Systems --Logic Modeling --Multi-Media Information Systems --Methods and Tools for IS Development Organizational Systems and Technology --Creativity/Innovation in IS Organisations --Strategic and Competitive IS --Organizational DSS --Measuring the Effectiveness of Emerging Technologies --Modeling the Dynamic of Organizations and Informations Systems --Issues in Technology Transfer --Internet and the Information Superhighway A list of minitrack chairs (for paper submission), instructions for submitting papers, important dates (submission date is June 1, 1994), information on other tracks, and information about the conference itself is available from Eileen Dennis (edennis@uga.cc.uga). \EOA 0114* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALL FOR PAPERS - Pacific Research Institute for IS and Managemt * * Donald Amoroso, Univ of Colorado-CS (amoroso@excel.uccs.edu) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * PRIISM '95 Conference Pacific Research Institute for Information Systems and Management January 2, 1995 Kihei, Hawaii The 1995 PRIISM Conference will feature introductory tutorials, contributed papers, and panel discussions.
