Eighteen INFOSYS subscribers responded and their opinions and illustrative comments can be summarised as follows: 15 positives: "informative" "helpful" "particularly valuable" 5 negatives: "largely wasted" "I skip it" "not worth space" 3 neutrals/unclear responses Many of the respondents -- positive, negative, and neutral -- agreed that the best solution would be to put the Calendar on a Gopher server and include a pointer to it in each INFOSYS issue. Then readers could get the Calender if and when they want it. Greg Welsh is working on an INFOSYS Gopher/FTP site that would include a continually updated Calendar file as well as back issues of INFOSYS. We expect to announce that shortly. In the meantime, articles continue to flood in. This issue skips the Calendar again to allow extra room for articles. Look for a full Calendar of Upcoming Events in issue 13, to be published in a few days. Issue 14 will follow in less than a week. \EOA 0101* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CONFERENCE - IFIP TC8 Open Conference (TC8AUS) * * Bernard Glasson, Curtin Univ (glasson@ba1.curtin.edu.au) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * IFIP TC8 Open Conference (TC8AUS) Business Process Re-Engineering: Information Systems Opportunities and Challenges May 8-12, 1994 Bond University, Queensland Gold Coast, Australia TC8AUS is the 1994 IFIP Technical Committee 8 (Information Systems) Open Conference. The conference theme is business process re- engineering through integrated information systems efforts. Business process re-engineering is the restructuring of organisa- tional processes through the innovative use of information systems and technology (IS/T). The aim is to refit or revamp the organisa- tion to survive today's economic downturn and to emerge refreshed and revitalised to meet its social obligations and accept its economic challenges into the next century. Effective business process re-engineering requires an integrated approach to IS/T research, development, application and education. Keynote speakers are Prof Mats Lundeberg, Sweden; Prof Niels Bjorn- Andersen, Denmark; Professor Ralph Sprague, USA; Professor Doug Vogel, USA; and Professor John King, USA. Conference tracks (papers and panels) are Design and Development Issues (8.1), Organisational Issues (8.2), Decision Support Systems (8.3), Office Information Systems (8.4) and IS in the Public Sector (8.5), Applications, Educational Issues, Research and Development Research Methods, Integrating Theory and Practice, Integrating Planning, Development and Operations, Integrating Technical and Organisational Aspects, Outsourcing - Integrating external and internal resources? Network Organizations' ascent to prominence date from the 1970s, when some large companies began to subcontract their manufacturing functions to low-wage countries. Multilevel hierarchy firms have given way to clusters of business units coordinated by market mechanisms and long term commitment. These market guided entities are commonly referred to as "network organizations", "modular organizations", and "virtual organizations." This special issue will explore how Network Organizations may benefit from IT in the respects of coordination, communication, control, and organizational learning. Papers from a multitude of perspectives, interpretive or positive, conceptual or empirical, are welcome. Papers with a strong theoretical focus, interdisciplinary, and with clear connections to the study and practice of network organizations are particularly encouraged. Potential areas include, but are not restricted to: --Design, implementation, and impacts of IT within network organizations --Current uses and limits of IT applications in network organizations --Modelling the unique network coordination activities --IT support for network coordination in the respects of communication, control, review, and organizational learning. Four copies of the paper should be submitted to the Guest Editor of the special issue no later than July 1, 1994: Professor Chee Ching Decision and Information Systems College of Business Arizona State University Tempe, AZ 85287-4206 Phone: (602) 965-6955 Fax: (602) 965-5539 E-mail: atcyc@acvax.inre.asu.edu \EOA 0107* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALL FOR PAPERS - Expert Systems in Accounting Educ (Acct Educ) * * Alan Sangster, Aberdeen University (a.sangster@aberdeen.ac.uk) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Call for Papers Accounting Education (UK) Special issue on Expert Systems in Accounting Education to be published March 1995 Accounting Education is a quarterly international journal devoted to publishing research-based papers and other information on key aspects of accounting education and training of relevance to practitioners, academics, trainers, students and professional bodies. Expert systems are now in widespread use among the leading professional accountancy firms. However, until recently, their use in higher education accounting courses was fragmented and generally restricted to specialist options taken towards the end of a student's studies. There is already evidence that the accountancy profession is beginning to look for its new entrants to be not just computer literate, but expert systems literate. As a result, it is only a matter of time before syllabuses start being revised to incorporate expert systems, much as they have been revised over the last ten years to incorporate spreadsheets and databases. As a signpost of the various options available when setting out to integrate expert systems into the curriculum, this special issue of Accounting Education seeks to define an international perspective on the manner in which the technology is now being utilised by accounting educators. Papers are invited on any aspect of the use of expert systems in accounting education - theoretical, practical or case study oriented. The deadline for submissions is 31 July 1994. All submissions (3 copies) and enquiries should be addressed to: Alan Sangster Guest Editor, Accounting Education Department of Accountancy Aberdeen University Dunbar Street Aberdeen AB9 2TY United Kingdom a.sangster@aberdeen.ac.uk \EOA 0108* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALL FOR PAPERS - Electronic Publishing (JASIS) * * Robin Peek, Simmons College (rpeek@vmsvax.simmons.edu) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Call for Papers Journal of the American Society for Information Science Special Issue on Electronic Publishing In late 1995 the Journal of the American Society for Information Science (JASIS) will publish a special issue on the topic of Electronic Publishing. The guest editor will be Professor Robin Peek of Simmons College. Electronic publishing (e-publishing) is creating new ways of thinking about publishing. This form of publishing utilizes computers and/or networks for the creation, delivery, or dissemination of 'published" information. Publishing has special attributes that differentiate it from communication. It implies the creation of a "thing" whether that be an e-journal, an on-line book, a CD, and so forth. Publishing has finality, responsibility, legal, and even moral implications. When something is published, the authors ask for readership and the chance for the information to be considered important. Papers are solicited in the areas of particular aspects of research done in areas of electronic publishing, including theoretical and working models. Scholarly essays will be considered. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: --User studies --Models of delivery --Application of newer technologies (ie, virtual reality, multi-media) --Economics of delivery --E-publishing management --Policy or legal research Four copies of the manuscript should be sent to: Professor Robin Peek Graduate School of Library and Information Science Simmons College 300 The Fenway Boston, MA 02115-5898 USA Voice: (617) 521-2807 Fax: (617) 521-3191 E-mail: rpeek@vmsvax.simmons.edu Manuscripts must be submitted in hard copy (i.e., paper) form by December 31, 1994. Original artwork and a signed copy of the copyright release form will be required for all accepted papers.
