The findings of a National Research Council committee on computers and productivity have been published by the National Academy Press in "Information Technology in the Service Society." Among the findings: 1) Macroeconomic data collected to measure productivity does not take into account improvements in quality, convenience and reliability, or losses avoided through information technology. 2) Information technology has had a direct and positive impact on the way companies operate. 3) Information technology has transformed the relationship between customers and suppliers. 4) Information technology has had a profound effect on employment patterns. 5) Information technology has fostered broad restructurings and strategic changes in service industries. (Investor's Business Daily 1/25/94 p.4) COLLABORATIVE SOFTWARE. Intel has introduced new software for users of disparate PCs who want to work on documents together and see each other while doing so. In marketing ProShare VideoSystem 200, Intel is staking out its territory in the fledgling PC conferencing industry, as well as persuading PC buyers to switch to its new Pentium chip to run the software. Haas, Kent State University (lhaas@kentvm.kent.edu) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Approximately one year ago seven business librarians decided to create a comprehensive guide to business sources available on the Internet. Thus the project BUSINESS SOURCES ON THE NET (BSN) was born. After months of soul searching, many discussions about the content of the guide, and finally "surfing" the Net, the Guide was finished. BSN is organized by subject. Each section is a separate file, available via anonymous ftp to ksuvxa.kent.edu in the Library Directory. BSN is also available via Gopher to refmac.kent.edu 70 under its full name. There are nine files available to the public. Information on other business subjects is being compiled. They will be made available in later editions of BSN. Subjects (with filename/filetype) covered in this edition: --Introduction, Internet Guides and Common Definitions (BSN.INTRO) --General Business Sources (BSN.General) --Economics (BSN.Economics) --Foreign Statistics, Economic Trends and International Management (BSN.Statistics) --Corporate Finance and Banking (BSN.Finance) --Human Resources and Personnel Management (BSN.Personnel) --Management Science, Statistical Methods and Productions and Operations Management (BSN.Operations) --Accounting and Taxation (BSN.Accounting) --Management and Management of Public and Nonprofit Organizations (BSN.Management) --Computers (as they relate to business) (BSN.Computers) For more information contact: Leslie M. An additional AU$2,000 may be available for an exceptional candidate. The possibility exists for converting to a PhD program at the end of 1994 with the scholarship continuing through 1995-96. REQUIREMENTS: Applicants should have a first class honours degree in information systems, computing or an associated discipline. Consideration will be given to applicants with a lesser academic qualification but with demonstrated research experience in a relevant area of information systems, and/or significant industrial experience in the application of computing in managerial areas, specifically to the use of information technology in the support of managerial decision making and enterprise and project performance monitoring. The MSTR program focuses on the development of theoretical frameworks for supporting management deliberations and on their application to the design of management support systems. Computer systems, embodying these frameworks, are being developed in parallel with the theoretical work. We anticipate that the recipient of the scholarship will be happy to move back and forth between very high level debate over issues related to human cognition and management process, and hacking sophisticated VisualBASIC code which implements these ideas. Panko, Univ of Hawaii (panko@dscience.cba.hawaii.edu) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Announcing the NetEd-L Conference PURPOSE: NetEd-L was created for teachers of datacoms and telecoms courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, primarily in business schools. This is a frustrating field to teach in because teachers usually don't have many local colleagues to draw upon and because the field is changing so rapidly. We need to turn to one another for assistance, ideas, and teaching materials. NetEd-L is also open to people in industry who are interested in helping further teaching in the field. A secondary goal of NetEd-L is to try to stimulate interest in research in the area. To subscribe to the list, send a message to: maiser@busadm.cba.hawaii.edu With the following in the body of the message: subscribe neted-l You should recieve a confirmation message stating your successful subscription to the list. If you have any problems subscribing to the list, please send an e-mail message to postmaster@busadm.cba.hawaii.edu who will then help subscribe you. Once you are subscribed please submit a message to meted-l@busadm.cba.hawaii.edu that tells us about yourself. A full vita would be fine, but shorter pieces can be more directed. After everybody has met, let's get to work. We encourage personal introductions, course introductions and syllabi, case studes, teaching materials, questions posed to the group for help, directions in employment, news (but not product advertisements), general and discussions of what we should be teaching and how we should be teaching it. \EOA 0056* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE: Tech Writing for Computing Professionals * * Daniel Goulet, Otto-von-Guericke-University * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * I have found that young (beginning) computer professionals have a difficult time writing well -- memos, proposals, reports, software documentation -- it really does not matter what the subject is. I am putting together a course called "Writing for Computing Professionals". The target audience is third and fourth (junior/ senior) students. My questions are: "What should beginning computing professionals know about writing?" and "What kinds of writing should they be exposed to?" Would you share your thoughts, papers, references with me? I, in turn, wouldbe willing to organize them and return them to INFOSYS for open discussion. Daniel V.
