IFIP Congress '94 will be held in Hamburg, Germany, August 28 - September 2, 1994. If the grant is approved, FOCUS will be able to support travel for approximately 20 attendees. Funding will be limited to $1000 maximum per attendee. A review panel consisting of a representative from the FOCUS Board of Directors and other experts in the field will evaluate individual grant applications. None of the review panel members or members of the FOCUS Board of Directors will be eligible for a travel grant under this program. Applicants should provide the selection committee with a current resume and relevant details of their planned conference activities (i.e., present papers, chair sessions, serve as panel members, etc.) and/or how participation will benefit their current activities and research. Junior and minority faculty members are especially encouraged to apply. All award recipients must be residents of the U.S. and travel by U.S. carriers. In addition, they will be required to file a brief report following the conference on their activities and experience at the Congress. Individuals wishing to submit applications should contact the FOCUS Secretariat, 1730 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20036-1992; phone (202) 371-0101, fax (202) 728-9614; e-mail (Internet: grant@computer.org). \EOA 0046* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE - Electronic Text on Business Info Mgmt * * Barry Spaul, University of Exeter (b.j.spaul@exeter.ac.uk) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * I have recently been involved in producing an Accounting Historians bibliography containing text and graphics. The work utilises the latest self-displaying software (Farrallon's Replica - info from ftp.farallon.com) so that anyone with an Apple or windows machine will be able to draw down the file and view/print it. In using this software it crossed my mind that a similar technique could be used to produce a textbook and distribute it at very low cost. I wondered if enough academics would be interested in this to produce a text on Business Information Management. My idea is that individuals can submit various chapters on different topics, then a group of the 'great and good' could select the primary text in each topic and perhaps several supplemental texts, which had particular areas of strength but lacked the overall coverage of the primary text. The texts could then be 'licenced' to universities in the same way that software is. Licence cost would be low and dependent on numbers of students and contributions made to the text by staff. Authors could expect a return similar to the royalties they would receive from a publisher but the cost to the student would be very low indeed. It seems like an interesting project to attempt and lets face it if academics like us don't try it who will. If you are interested in participating, drop me a line telling me which topic you would be most interested in covering. Natural language searching, relevance weighting and feedback, and "fuzzy" searching systems, formerly research laboratory systems, are now appearing as new applications on commercial services. Examples are natural language/relevance feedback systems announced by West Publishing and Mead Data Central and Dialog Information Services' TARGET feature. Come to Albuquerque and hear presentations on this highly significant and relevant topic in the information industry. Also to be discussed will be the navigational interfaces of the Internet, customized delivery services, and the future of full-text systems. Speakers will include representatives from Personal Library Software, West Publishing, Dialog, Mead Data Central, Congressional Quarterly, Dow Jones, RapidPatent, WAIS Inc., Conquest Software, Clarit Corporation, NIST, Individual Inc., Desktop Data, and Sandpoint Corporation. In addition, Donna Harman of NIST will speak on the TREC project evaluating retrieval systems, Linda Hill of NASA will report on a study evaluating WAIS by the University of Maryland, and James Callan of the University of Massachusetts will review the session. The meeting will begin with a reception on the evening of March 20 and continue with presentations and discussions through noon on March 22.
