Here is a quick explanation what these mean to you. The \EOA mark means "end of article" and is useful for those INFOSYS readers who have e-mail programs with a search-and-find feature. Rather than page down through INFOSYS these readers can set their mailer to find each occurrence of the character string \EOA. This brings the beginning of each new article to the top of their screen so they view INFOSYS article-by-article rather than screen-by-screen. The inclusion of an end of article mark was suggested by several readers after December's test issue, but there appears to be no network-wide standard for this mark. As a result I designated \EOA for INFOSYS. If and when a standard emerges INFOSYS will adopt it. The article numbering system was adopted for future use in indexing and archiving INFOSYS articles. As is the case with academic journals, most of us are interested in individual INFOSYS articles, not a collection of articles (ie, back issues). Assigning a unique number to each INFOSYS article will enable us to build a better archiving system and make it easier for INFOSYS subscribers to find and access previously published articles. \EOA 0028* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ANNOUNCEMENT - Grants for Research in IT for Law and Accounting * * Greg Welsh, American University (gwelsh@american.edu) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The National Center for Automated Information Research (NCAIR) is pleased to announce to professionals and educators in the law and accounting fields that it is accepting grant applications for research on the application of information technology to law and accounting practice and education. NCAIR is accepting applications for: 1. Research support for individual projects in law or accounting up to $150,000 2. Research support of joint projects benefiting the legal and accounting professions in an amount of up to $150,000 3. A senior research fellowship for a sabbatical year up to $75,000 Applicants must submit a completed grant application, budget and practice impact statement. The application must define the scope of the research, describe the methodology to be used, and estimate the time required to do the research. All grant applications are reviewed by NCAIR's Executive Committee. The application deadline is April 1, 1994. Application forms may be obtained from Ann Brownell Sloane Manager, NCAIR 165 East 72nd Street, Suite 1B New York, NY 10021-4335 USA Phone: (212) 249-0760. Requests for application forms may also be sent to ncair@chicagokent.kentlaw.edu. Please remember to include your postal mailing address when requesting applications via e-mail. \EOA 0029* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE - User Responses to CASE Tools * * Donald Day, Syracuse University (d01dayxx@suvm.syr.edu) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Respondents Sought for Study of User Responses to CASE Tools An extensive study of user behavioral and perceptual responses to constraints implemented via CASE tools is under way at Syracuse University (US). Respondents are sought for a questionnaire which explores user experiences and judgments regarding CASE tool usage. If you are active in software development and are willing to complete a questionnaire (approx one hour), please contact the primary investigator, Donald Day, at d01dayxx@suvm.acs.syr.edu. A copy of the questionnaire will be sent via return e-mail. Three types of respondents are sought: (1) CASE tool users, (2) CASE tool developers (designers of the tools themselves), and (3) non- CASE tool users who have experience developing medium-to-large software systems. Respondents will be sent a summary of findings, upon request. \EOA 0030* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALL FOR PAPERS - Distributed Artificial Intelligence Workshop * * Mark Klein, Boeing Computer Services (mklein@atc.boeing.com) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 13th International Distributed Artificial Intelligence Workshop July 28-30, 1994 Seattle, Washington USA Distributed artificial intelligence (DAI) is concerned with the cooperative solution of problems in multi-agent intelligent systems with both computational and human agents. The goal of the 1994 DAI Workshop is "making connections": trying to better understand the connections between DAI and related fields as well as real-world problems. The Workshop will include technical presentations, invited talks, breakout groups, and a poster/demonstration session. Diverse perspectives and approaches are of interest including, but not limited to: --"real-world" DAI systems: case studies and design principles --design of coordination-capable agents: task decomposition, distributed reasoning, conflict management etc --multi-agent learning --societies of agents --implementational approaches: languages, frameworks, infrastructures etc. Participation is by invitation only and limited to approximately 35 people. To participate please submit four copies of a technical paper (15 pages or less) describing original research or significant applications in DAI. Theoretical papers should explain how their principles and methods can be mapped to applications, while applied papers should explain why they use the techniques that they do. Several "observers" may also be invited to attend: if interested please submit a brief (1-2 page) description of your research interests and reason for participation. Papers due: March 15, 1994 Notification: April 30, 1994 Final papers: May 30, 1994 Send submissions (including authors' e-mail addresses) to: Mark Klein DAI Workshop Chair Boeing Computer Services, MS 7L-44 PO Box 24346 Seattle WA 98124-0346 USA Voice: +1 (206) 865-3412 Fax: +1 (206) 865-2965 E-mail: mklein@atc.boeing.com Electronic submissions in ascii, Macintosh Word or RTF format are welcome. Participants are invited to prepare posters and/or demos for presentation; please advise the workshop chair if you plan to do so. A limited number of "scholarships" are available to support graduate student attendance. \EOA 0031* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALL FOR PAPERS - Information Systems Development - ISD'94 * * John Grogan (j.grogan@lmu.ac.uk) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Fourth International Conference Information Systems Development - ISD'94 Methods and Tools, Theory and Practice 20-22 September 1994 Bled (Slovenia) Information Systems Development (ISD) progresses rapidly, constantly creating new challenges for the professionals involved.
