Page 23 Trends in Copyright Practices of Scholarly Electronic Journals Pamela Pavliscak Although the economic exploitation of copyrighted works is the pervasive theme of current legislation, the copyright practices of full-text, scholarly journals, drawn from a survey of journal publishers, indicate that fair use in a networked digital environment continues to be a goal of scholarly publication. Page 39 Deselection of Inactive Serials or What to do When It's Already Dead Marilyn McKinley Parrish Academic libraries of all sizes face the prospect of canceling serial subscriptions due to rising costs and decreasing budgets. Large and small academic libraries do not have the space to house long runs of all active and inactive titles in their collections. There are many reasons why libraries undertake collection evaluations. Some libraries evaluate their serial collections before adding them to an online catalog, others because of lack of space. How do academic libraries incorporate deselection of inactive periodical titles into their collection management plan? What criteria should be used when weeding inactive titles? Automation provided an excellent opportunity for serial collection evaluation at Millersville University's Ganser Library. This article describes an evaluation tool developed for inactive serials during the Spring semester of 1995. These titles provide a bonanza of statistical information useful to a wide variety of researchers. Page 77 Index Medicus Price Study: Publishing Trends from 1992-1996 Lynn M. Fortney and Victor A. Basile The sixth edition of the Index Medicus Price Study examines biomedical journal publishing trends over a five-year period (1992-1996) and analyzes these trends by subject category and country of publication. Its purpose is to provide librarians with information about inflationary trends within specific disciplines and enable them to educate their constituents about the financial requirements necessary to support the various medical specialties. Page 99 Electronic Journal Forum: Journals Online Expands the Options for E-Journal Search and Retrieval Tom Moothart Bath Information and Data Services (BIDS) has developed Journals Online, a system which links a Web-based bibliographic database to electronic journal articles loaded on publishers' servers. Barry Smethurst, Director of BIDS, was interviewed about the capabilities of Journals Online and the role it will play as publishers investigate innovative methods of distributing their products.
