Papers Boissonnas, Christian M. Katina's Baby: The Charleston Conference at 15. pp. 281-299. At 15, the Charleston Acquisitions Conference continues to be a success. It began as a regional conference with 32 participants and speakers and is now an international meeting with over 400 participants from the United States and other countries. The author first attempts to define an objective methodology for evaluating the success of professional meetings. Next he describes the conference and its evolution over time concentrating on the attendees, speakers, programs, publications, and he compares it to other acquisitions meetings. Finally, using the methodology developed earlier, the author discusses why Charleston is a successful conference. Baum, Marsha L. Unsolicited Merchandise: Gift or Sale? pp. 301-309. Receipt of unsolicited materials by libraries raises questions of liability and responsibility for payment. This article provides a discussion of the law surrounding unsolicited merchandise and references to the state and federal statutes which provide protection for the recipient of unordered goods. Wise, Kenneth and D.E. Perushek. Linear Goal Programming for Academic Library Acquisitions Allocations. pp. 311-327. The allocation of an academic library's acquisitions funds should contribute to the achievement of the library's goals and objectives. The availability of diverse materials and the varying demands of user needs in a variety of subject disciplines may represent a set of conflicting, incommensurate goals. Lexicographic linear goal programming offers an appropriate allocation methodology for determining an optimal solution with conflicting goals. This article applies this methodology to 90 funds representing books and periodicals in 45 subject disciplines at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT). The model's goals incorporate several categories of budget constraints and user needs. The application of this formula resulted in the successful distribution of $3.5 million while taking into consideration ten goals or variables ranging from circulation to number of faculty and students. It also builds in accommodations for political factors and pressures, a unique feature in allocation formulas. 1995 Charleston Conference Meyers, Barbara. What Do You Feed Precocious Dinosaurs so They'll Stay Healthly? pp. 351-353. These short remarks served as my introduction to three presentations which formed the now-traditional Publishers Panel at the 1995 Charleston Conference. I provided the panelists with the following short premise on which to base their remarks. Publishers need to go electronic or perish, right? If so, what do they need to do to survive ... what environmental changes do they need to cope with ... what new business models do they need to create ... and what market expectations (of publishers and customers) are appropriate?
