The Evaluation, Selection and Acquisition of Looseleaf Publications. Many legal library materials appear in looseleaf format. The cost of these publications strains already tight library budgets. It is essential to scrutinize potential acquisitions of this type, learning as much about these expensive sets as possible before purchasing them. The evaluation criteria used in this paper -- publisher, cost, bibliographical value, physical quality, and relevance to the library's collection -- helps the librarian make an informed selection decision. This article also addresses the practices of telemarketing and publisher's representatives. Rooks, Dana C. Electronic Serials: Administrative Angst or Answer. Someone's always got a new "answer" for the problems confronting libraries today. One answer being widely espoused these days is the electronic serial. Is the electronic serial the answer or does it merely create a new set of problems we must address? The author shows that it is both answer and angst -- for librarians and for patrons. The paper focuses on five areas related to the decision to provide access to electronic serials in libraries: budgeting considerations; staffing resources which includes the significant issue of training; collection development implications; patron reaction; and political realities, both internal and external. Keating, Lawrence R. II, Christa M. Easton, and Judi A. Goodman. Electronic Journal Subscriptions. Electronic journals are the serials equivalent of Detroit's concept cars: fast, flashy, and future- oriented. They offer high-speed and high-end performance at a currently low cost. There still are some bugs to be worked out, among them transmission problems, long-term maintenance, ownership and property rights, and questionable respectability. The focus of this tutorial, however, is not on broad issues, but rather on the practical aspects of processing electronic journal subscriptions, on the nuts and bolts--and sometimes monkey-wrenches--of getting e-journals into the library showroom and out to the customer. Conference Reports Chapman, Liz. Knowledge for Europe: Librarians and Publishers Working Together. Knowledge for Europe, a conference held in Brussels on November 11-13, 1992, was organized by The European Foundation for Library Cooperation and the Working Group of European Librarians and Publishers. Twenty papers from eight different countries took the conference participants through the main challenges and threats of current trends in book, journal and electronic information. The participants were from the library and publishing fields with a disappointing scarcity of booksellers. Review Section Tom Nisonger. LOGOS: The Professional Journal of the Book Trade.
