I've spent a few days checking old websites that are still being served, and
tracing who actually pays to keep each one online. Not archived copies, the
live URLs. Five of them:
- spacejam.com/1996/ - the 1996 Space Jam promo site, unchanged (footer still
"(c) 1996 Warner Bros."). Served from Warner Bros.' own nameservers; domain
held via MarkMonitor.
- heavensgate.com - the actual 1997 Heaven's Gate site, live and unchanged
(Last-Modified 2014-11-01). The domain is held by TELAH Foundation, an entity
the group registered before its members died; renewed Dec 2025.
- dolekemp96.org - the 1996 Dole/Kemp campaign site, frozen on "Today's
Headlines November 5, 1996" (the day Dole lost). Presented by 4President.org,
which also mirrors the Clinton/Gore '96 site.
- milliondollarhomepage.com - still the pixel grid, "Sold: 1,000,000 /
Available: None", footer "(c) 2005 Alex Tew", paid up to 2030. The wrinkle:
the HTML being served is a modified copy in which 1,164 dead outbound links
were rewritten to Wayback snapshots. The page survives; almost nothing it
pointed at does.
- zombo.com - the old "you can do anything" page is gone. The domain sold in
Feb 2026 via GoDaddy and now serves a New Management notice.
The pattern that surprised me: for four of the five, the thing keeping the page
alive is a named person or a small entity (a foundation, a campaign-history
outfit, the original author), not an archive. Archives capture the page;
someone else still pays the rent. And milliondollarhomepage is a reminder that a
preserved copy can be quietly not the original.
