Federal agencies invest significant resources into gathering data, either
directly or through sponsored research. However, the federal data
infrastructure is often fragile, leaving critical datasets vulnerable to
unforeseeable loss. As public data was removed from federal agency websites
in 2025, the need to rescue and preserve federal data, and build a more
sustainable, resilient, and trustworthy data infrastructure, has become
more urgent than ever.


In this interactive panel discussion, experts from organizations engaged in
back up and preservation of federal data will discuss what efforts have
been taken, what has been lost, what is at stake, where lost data can still
be found, what actions are needed moving forward, and how these
preservation efforts help to restore public trust in science. Attendees
will have the opportunity to have deep dives in breakout sessions to
discuss gaps and risks in the federal data ecosystem, and share resources
on how they can take action. This event is organized by Sections X and Y in
coordination with the AAAS Membership Office.
