Dear colleagues,
Following up on my previous post, I’m pleased to share that off-campus
access testing is now implemented in Lighthouse.
For those who may have missed the earlier thread: Lighthouse is a
lightweight testing framework designed to help libraries proactively verify
access to subscribed electronic resources.
In the attached recording, you’ll see the agent running in a test
environment. The agent first establishes an OpenAthens session and then
proceeds to execute access tests for BMJ and AIP. This demonstrates the
full authentication flow prior to publisher verification.
To clarify the deployment model:
• The video shows a development/testing setup.
• In production, the agent runs automatically inside a Docker container in
headless mode.
• Tests are executed without manual intervention, following the configured
schedule.
In addition to off-campus testing, I’ve also introduced a new feature that
allows libraries to define subscription start and end dates per test
definition. Lighthouse can now notify libraries ahead of subscription
expiration, helping teams proactively review renewals and avoid unexpected
access interruptions.
Next steps: I’m currently looking for libraries willing to participate by
providing access to their off-campus authentication systems or proxy tools
such as EZproxy to be implemented and supported in Lighthouse. OpenAthens
is already implemented and working, so the focus is on expanding
compatibility with other authentication environments.
If your institution is interested in participating or testing this feature,
I would be very happy to collaborate.
Please fill the onboarding request form and I will get in touch with you
soon
https://lighthouse.libpages.com/auth/onboarding
Participating libraries will receive extended pilot access while we refine
and expand proxy compatibility.
Thank you for your feedback and support.
Best regards,
Hussam
