Dear Colleagues,
We invite you to join us for an essential conversation about predatory
publishing in the context of global scholarly communications.
When: February 10, 2026, 2:00 PM ET
Where: Zoom
Registration: https://nasig.org/event-6533330
ABOUT THIS WEBINAR
This session offers a nuanced examination of predatory publishing through
both practical and global lenses. Drawing on Rick Anderson's "local-global
dialectic" from his recent work on the scholarly communications landscape,
we'll explore predatory publishing as both a local challenge requiring
immediate intervention and an international phenomenon shaped by systemic
factors.
Attendees will learn:
* Key characteristics and behaviors of predatory publishers, informed
by current research
* Practical evaluation strategies for assessing journals
* Pedagogical approaches for supporting authors in making informed
publishing decisions
* Global structural solutions, including reforms to scholarly
assessment and diamond open access models
* How to frame journal selection as an information literacy competency
This webinar emphasizes actionable knowledge while contextualizing predatory
publishing within the broader challenges facing scholars worldwide,
particularly those from underrepresented regions.
SPEAKER
Monica Berger, Professor, Library, New York City College of Technology,
CUNY, is the author of Predatory Publishing and Global Scholarly
Communications (ACRL, 2024). Her scholarship addresses the marginalization
of Global South scholars and advocates for quality diamond open access and
reformed scholarly assessment as solutions to predatory publishing.
