I would have never guessed that VLC Media *Player* would be able to record something. Apparently, it can.

From that link:     
"VLC is unable to record the system sound. It is inconvenient for someone who would like to record a meeting, a lecture, or a live performance."

In short, you will need a different product for your stated goal. I don't have sufficient knowledge in this area to offer assistance although we offer OBS studio (https://obsproject.com/) as an acceptable free option for students.
