I am not sure how these stack up against the PaperMate, but for brightness,
color variety, and writing feel I've always loved the Stabilo Point 88
Finelner:

It's a felt-tip, which has its pluses and minuses. On the plus side, I've
never used a pen that felt more "pencil-like" in use. On the minus side you
need to treat it with the care necessary of a felt-tip pen.

if you're looking for something with the smoothness of a liquid or gel pen,
though, these might not be for you.
