Looking at the manuals, it looks like the keyboard is for writing the 
BASIC that you send to the printer.  It also looks like you can use your 
own computer if you don't want to use that keyboard. The BASIC reference 
is in the manual for the printer starting at page 158.  You could 
probably get barcodes out of it without the BASIC, but if you know 
someone who played around with computers back in the 8-bit days (Apple 
II, Commodore 64, TRS-80 and computers from that time all came with some 
version of BASIC) they might be able to make sense out of the reference 
faster than anyone else.
