Hi Mark,
I know that the Remixing Archival Metadata Project (
https://github.com/UMiamiLibraries/RAMP) uses the ACE editor (
https://ace.c9.io/#nav=about) to do something similar to what you are
describing. It's an embeddable code editor written in JavaScript. It
might be worth a look.
