Thanks all for the input on unicode fonts.
It does seem that crafting our own pan-unicode font is a job we don't really want 
to attempt. I'm taking a closer look at our software stack and think I might be 
able to alter a library to make it work with multiple fonts. (xhtml2pdf seems to 
be the culprit, we're running a python stack of that xhtml2pdf and reportlab.)
