I don't think that we have charged for pre-conferences in previous
years, have we? I am pretty sure that we haven't charged for
hackfests.
I am not sure I understand your point which seems to be: Since there
are travel costs associated with going to the hackfest/precon, we
should charge a fee to make it more expensive.
I think that we should encourage everyone to participate in as much of
code4lib as they can. Perhaps we should charge $225 for code4lib and
give a $100 rebate to folks who attend the precon.
