For CSS3, the working group feels that screen readers should combine screen and speech media types as that is what they actually are doing. They read a screen and then speak it. Which is why they dropped the 'reader' type early on.

Whether or not any of the various screen readers will follow suit, we just have to wait and see, but they could use the limited aural function set of 2.1 to do it now.
