I'll generally write a program (even if it takes longer than some kind of
one-off solution) if I can forsee having to do the same or a similar task,
repeatedly, later.

My rule of thumb is:  If I've had to do it twice before, I'll automate it....
'cause I *know* I'll have to do it again eventually :-)
