PARS Micropublishing Monday, February 6, 8:30-11 am; WYN-Seminar A Topic: "Stayin' Alive: Micropublishing in the 90's." Speakers include Dan Arbour, University Microfilms International; Mark Holland, Research Publications, Inc.; and Norman Ross, Norman Ross Publishing, Inc. AS Automated Acquisitions/In Process Control Systems Monday, February. 6, 9:30-11 am; PCC-Auditorium Topic: "Using Technology's Tools." Discussion leaders are Paul Kohberger, University of Pittsburgh, "Using technology's tools for acquisitions data gathering and collection refinement," and Colleen Hyslop, Michigan State University, "Using technology's tools for in-process control." They will describe their experiences in utilizing software for data gathering and manipulation in the acquisition and in-process control of library materials. AS Out-of-Print and Gifts & Exchange Joint Meeting Monday, February 6, 9:30-11 am; PCC-Room 102A/B Topic: "Librarians & Bookdealers: the OP/Gifts Connection for Collection Development." Speakers include George R. Allen of William H. Allen, Bookseller, Philadelphia; and Samuel J. Hough of The Owl at the Bridge, Cranston, Rhode Island, who will be discussing how bookdealers can help acquire out-of-print materials for libraries and increase library revenue by purchasing unwanted items. CCS Heads of Cataloging Monday, February 6, 9:30-11 am; PCC-Room 109B PUBLIC FORUM: CMDS Admin. of Collection Development Committee Monday, February 6, 9:30 am-12:30 pm; PCC-Room 108A A public forum will be held at the Midwinter Conference in Philadelphia to discuss the draft of Guide to Written Collection Policy Statements second edition. The Subcommittee is interested in feedback from public, school, academic, and special librarians. PARS Preservation Microfilming Monday, February 6, 11:30 am-12:30 pm; WYN-Salon 4 The topic of discussion will be creating preservation microfilm with the intention of eventually digitizing/scanning it for improved access, and the concerns to keep in mind when planning for this possibility. The discussion will be moderated by Lee Dirks, Manager of Preservation Services at Preservation Resources (in Bethlehem, PA). Pre-Order/Pre-Catalog Search Monday, February 6, 2-4 pm; PCC-Room 105B Topic: "Pre-Catalog and THEY WILL Come," will focus on strategies for dealing with nonbook materials, including searching, pre-cataloging, ordering, tracking, pre-booking, cataloging and outsourcing. Virginia M. Berringer, Nonprint Cataloger the University of Akron and Linda L. Hansen, Vice President for Technical Services at Professional Media service will kick off the discussion by sharing a few of their ideas and experiences in handling nonbook materials, as well as some of the idiosyncrasies these formats present in our efforts to get them from vendor to shelf in time to meet our user's needs. Cooperative Collection Development Sunday, February 5, 9:30-11; Marriott-Room 301 Topic: How libraries are making use of the newly published ALA Guide to Cooperative Collection Development. There will also be a round-robin free discussion period. Research on Library Organization and Management Monday, February 6, 2-4; Omni-Room 110 Topic: How libraries are working with consultants on library reorganization projects. Three consultants will lead the discussion -- Maureen Sullivan, Barbie Keiser, and Jean Currie. They will tell us about themes they see emerging in how libraries are restructuring -- both in outcomes and about processes adopted. They will also give free advice to libraries thinking about hiring a consultant to facilitate reorganization. AS Acquisitions Librarians/Vendors of Library Materials Sunday, February 5, 10:30; PCC-Room 202A Topic: "Librarians and Vendors: The View for Both Sides of the Fence." A panel of professionals who at various stages of their careers have been both librarians and vendors will discuss the similarities among and the differences between these roles. A partial list of panelists includes Kent Hendrickson of Univ. of Nebraska, Jane Maddox from Harrassowitz, Corrie Marsh from UMI, and Arlene Sievers from Case-Western. Technical Services Administrators of Medium Sized Research Libraries Saturday, February 4, 9:30-12:30; Marriott-Room 411-412 Topic: Point/Counterpoint: Two Perspectives on Technical Services Survival; Expectations and Needs from a Library Director, and Strategies from a Technical Services Director. Speakers: Frank D'Andraia, Director of Libraries, University of North Dakota; Barbara Cervera, Associate Director for Technical Services & Systems, University of Connecticut Library. Frank D'Andraia will share his views of what he expects from Technical Services. Barbara Cervera will comment on current realities, new workloads, planning goals, and strategies to survive and prosper. Frank and Barbara will challenge the audience and each other to create a vital, positive future for Technical Services. Bring ideas of your realities and survival strategies and share them in small group discussions following the presentations. That will enable all of us to take home many new ideas and approaches. We will report the small group outcomes as well as the speakers' comments. PARS Collection Conservation Task Force Sunday, February 5, 8-9 a.m.; Wyndham Franklin-Conference Center Ballroom Topic: Staff at Collection Conservation Technician Training sites will discuss the successes and pitfalls (if they exist) of their projects. The funding of future projects will also be a topic of discussion. (Most of the projects have been funded through the NEH.) Institutional training sites are: Emory Univ. - Southeastern U.S.; Univ. of California, Berkeley - California and Hawaii; Univ. of Utah - Mountain and Plains states; Univ. of Washington - Northwestern U.S. In addition, AMIGOS, BookLab and the University of Texas at Austin collaborated and offered a one-week training program for institutions in the Southwestern U.S. ************************************************************************* ACRL JOURNAL COSTS IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES DISCUSSION GROUP The ACRL Journal Costs in Academic Libraries Discussion Group will meet on Saturday, February 4, 2-4 p.m. in PCC-Room 103B to discuss "Negotiating Prices and License Agreements for Networked Electronic Information." Discussion Group Chair/Moderator: Cindy Hepfer, State Univ. of New York-Buffalo. Speakers will be Trisha Davis, Ohio State Univ.; Beverlee French, Univ. of California;Sean Haggerty, SilverPlatter Information, Inc.; Karen Hunter, Elsevier Science Publishers; and Judy Luther, North American Sales, Institute for Scientific Information. There will be a panel presentation and discussion on negotiating prices and license agreements for networked electronic information. Bibliographic databases and full text databases will both be addressed. Additionally, two points of view will be represented, those of the libraries and the information producers/providers.
