It will focus on basic acquisitions of monographs and serials. The institute will be offered as a pilot project in conjunction with two regional library association meetings this fall. The first program will be a preconference to the Southeastern Library Association conference, to be held Oct. 25-26, 1994, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Two weeks later the program will be offered as a preconference to the California Library Association meeting on Nov. 11, in Anaheim, California. Participants will receive a broad overview of the operations involved in acquiring materials after the selection decision has been made. Topics to be covered include goals and methods of acquisitions services, operational management, publishers and suppliers, budgeting and financial management, ethics, and future trends in acquisitions. A variety of training methods will be used, and extensive handouts will be provided. Faculty for the SELA institute in Charlotte are Carol Pitts Hawks (Head, Acquisition Department, Ohio State University Libraries, and Editor-in-Chief, _Library Acquisitions: Practice and Theory_), and Trisha Davis (Head, Continuation Acquisition Division, Ohio State University Libraries). At the CLA institute in Anaheim the faculty will be Meta Nissley (Head, Acquisitions and Collection Management, California State University, Chico) and Joyce Ogburn (Chief Acquisitions Librarian, Yale University Library). Fees for ALCTS and SELA or CLA members is $95; ALA members $140; non-members $185. Elkington has edited the _RLG Archives Microfilming Manual_, the first publication of its kind to address comprehensively the many issues involved in preserving manuscripts and other archival materials on microfilm. Based on RLG's earlier manual, the _RLG Preservation Microfiliming Handbook_ (1992), which provides guidelines for filming monographs and serials, the new manual applies and adapts principles from the 1992 manual to archival preservation and examines in depth the special problems involved in selecting, preparing, filming, and providing access to archival materials being preserved on microfilm. It is available for $45.00 plus shipping and handling from Distribution Services Center, The Research Libraries Group, 1200 Villa Street, Mountain View, CA 94041-1100 or by e-mail to BL.DSC@RLG.STANFORD.EDU. The fax number is 415-964-0943. The Preservation Directorate of the Library of Congress has contracted with Picture Elements Incorporated for consulting services to work toward resolving preservation issues related to the use of digital imaging technology in libraries and archives. The project will develop a database for captured images for purposes of comparison and evaluation; develop various approaches to image capture and compression for representative materials from LC's print and pictorial collections; develop a methodology for evaluating image quality based on compression; provide programming to support interchange and interface needs; and develop standards-based approaches to the development of a proposed preservation file format. A report summarizing findings and recommendations is being prepared. Currently both LC and BL must maintain conversion programs to process each other's records. The participants also proposed the inclusion of Canada's CANMARC in the integration process and discussed the relationship between the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR) and MARC formats. To understand the differences between the two MARC systems, LC and BL are preparing discussion papers on the essential features of UKMARC that are not already in USMARC. Library representatives also proposed preparing discussion papers on the links between AACR and MARC formats. Meeting representatives said such an investigation could simplify and reduce costs in the creation of records. The papers are being prepared for a November 8-9 meeting at the Library of Congress of representatives of LC, BL, and the National Library of Canada. ************************************************************************* LAST CALL This is the last call for registrations for two upcoming ALCTS institutes. While there are still openings for New Directions in Library Binding and The Electronic Library: Administrative Issues for Organization and Access, the ALCTS Office will be closing registrations soon. Registration closes on September 15 for Library Binding, to be held in Minneapolis on September 30-October 1, and on October 14 for the Electronic Library in San Antonio on October 29-30. Should these institutes fill before those dates, the Office will also close registrations.
