Call Yvonne McLean at 800-545-2433 ext. 5032 or e-mail to yvonne.mclean@ala.org for information and registration for the following institutes: DEMYSTIFYING SUBJECT CATALOGING This day-and-half institute (November 10-11) will review and update fundamental subject cataloging principles, from analyzing a document's subject content to exploring the structure and application of LC subject headings and their subdivisions. It is geared toward original catalogers, librarians, and administrators involved in the creation, use, or management of subject retrieval data. The institute will build up the knowledge base and skills needed to effectively use current tools and procedures for subject cataloging in LCMARC records and other bibliographic products, and will introduce changes and developments in MARC subject authority records and use of subdivisions. It will offer a workshop in the process of subject analysis; intensive training in structure and use of LCSH; hands-on instruction in tools and techniques; presentation of Airlie House recommendations; and a presentation of key issues in the future of subject cataloging. The faculty members are Arlene G. Taylor, University of Pittsburgh School of Library and Information Science; Mary Kay Pietris or Lynne el Hoshey, both of the Library of Congress; and J. Bradford Young, University of Pennsylvania. Registration is open until October 28. The fee for ALCTS and CLA members is $145; for ALA members $190; for non-members $235. FUNDAMENTALS OF ACQUISITIONS This institute, offered on November 11, will focus on basic acquisitions of monographs and serials and the relationships among librarians, library booksellers, subscription agents, and other publishers. Librarians and paraprofessionals new to the acquisitions field will find this institute helpful. Participants will receive a broad overview of the operations involved in acquiring materials after the selection decision is made. The institute will discuss methods and strategies for acquiring different types of library materials, both domestic and foreign; introduce financial management and fiscal procedures related to library materials and acquisitions; and offer an overview of publishing operations that have an impact on library acquisitions. Faculty for this institute are Joyce Ogburn, Chief Acquisitions Librarian, Yale University Library, and Meta Nissley, Head, Acquisitions and Collection Management, California State University, Chico. Registration is open until October 28. The fee for ALCTS and CLA members is $95; for ALA members $140; for non-members $185. ************************************************************************ ALERT TO CHAIRS AND MEMBERS There are several "housekeeping" tasks which follow on the heels of Annual Conference. If you fall into any of the following categories, please read on! 1993-94 DISCUSSION GROUP CHAIRS If you chaired a discussion group last year and are *not* chairing the same one this year, please let the Office know as soon as possible. ALA Conference Services bases its conference mailing on coding from the membership database and if you are still coded as Chair, you will receive the mailings. 1994-95 DISCUSSION GROUP CHAIRS If you are a new chair this year, you will not receive ALA Conference Services mailings unless you are coded appropriately. Please let the Office know right away if you took on the chair's position since August 1. COMMITTEE CHAIRS A reminder that committee report forms were due into the ALCTS Office as soon after Annual Conference as possible. If you have not submitted yours yet, please do so now. These reports are used for several things, including coverage in the _ALCTS Newsletter_, possible Office follow-up, and names of new chairs. MEMBERS Volunteer forms are being accepted in the ALCTS Office for consideration for a 1995-96 committee appointment. Contact Nell at 800-545-2433 ext. 5035 to request a form. CHANGE OF ADDRESS All members need to keep the ALCTS Office and ALA Membership Services Office informed of any changes in job, mailing address, telephone number, or other pertinent data. Mailings are based on the Membership Services database and the ALCTS Office needs correct information for a variety of member-related activities. Please send corrections to both at any time of year. ************************************************************************* PUBLICATIONS The Library of Congress recently published _Boxes for the Protection of Books: Their Design and Construction_, a looseleaf guide for book conservators, museum technicians and library curators who wish to construct protective boxes for items in their collections.
