Younger reports that Karen Muller, Executive Director of ALCTS, will be a member of the governing council of the Cooperative Cataloging Council. Sarah Thomas, Director of Cataloging at the Library of Congress, invited ALCTS to hold membership on the council along with representatives from the Library of Congress, the National Library of Canada, OCLC Online Computer Library Center Inc. and Research Libraries Group as well as five participating program libraries. Younger said, "The representation of ALCTS by the executive director will ... serve us well. ALCTS performs key activities ... in developing cataloging rules through various committees, including the Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA) and the Subject Analysis Committee (SAC), and in serving a clearinghouse function for member and committee questions of what is being done where. The ALCTS Office is also the U.S. secretariat for the Joint Steering Committee and handles the publishing work with ALA Publishing for AACR. The activities of ALCTS on the governing council will thus complement those of individual program libraries and their representatives. "The inclusion of ALCTS is both appropriate and welcome. ALCTS representatives and committees, particularly those from the Cataloging and Classification Section, play a critical role in the ongoing development of cataloging principles and rules. ALCTS participation in the CCC will contribute greatly to the coordination of overall bibliographic control requirements and specifications and facilitate coalition building among all types of libraries." ************************************************************************* ALA LEGISLATION INFORMATION UPDATE PRELIMINARY AGENDA FOR ANNUAL CONFERENCE All those attending the ALA Annual Conference in Miami Beach are invited to participate in the following session: ALA COMMITTEE ON LEGISLATION INFORMATION UPDATE 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 25, 1994 Fontainebleau Hotel, Brittany Room Miami Beach, Florida PRELIMINARY AGENDA LSCA REAUTHORIZATION ISSUES 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Introduction of Speakers and E. The development of useful acquisitions management reports should be a joint venture between various constituencies in the library. This program will provide administrators at various levels within the organization, and in different kinds of organizations, with suggestions on creating appropriate management information and communicating that information effectively. Cosponsored by the ALCTS Acquisitions Section, Acquisitions Organization and Management Committee and the ALCTS Serials Section, Acquisitions Committee, the program will feature presentations by Tia Gozzi, Associate Director of Technical Services at Stanford University; Joe Raker, Acquisitions Librarian, Boston Public Library; and Beth Warner, Head, Library Systems Office, University of Michigan. Following the presentations, there will be ample time for questions and a general discussion. ************************************************************************* SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE TO HOLD SPECIAL FORUM On Friday, June 23, from 2:00 to 4:00, the ACLTS Scholarly Communications Committee will present a special open forum titled "The AAU/ARL Research Libraries Project: Final Task Force Recommendations." The event will be held in the Miami Beach Convention Center-B121+B122. This open forum is designed to bring librarians of all types up to date on the final recommendations of the AAU/ARL Task Forces. These task forces, under the direction of an AAU presidents' steering committee, examined the changing nature of scholarly communication, including the cost of managing research library collections, and the robust deployment of new technologies in support of scholarship. The task forces addressed: *Acquisition and Distribution of Foreign Language and Area Studies Materials *Managing Scientific and Technological Information *Intellectual Property Rights in an Electronic Environment. Electronic communication and computing technology provide new ways of collaborating in the conduct of research, as well as the dissemination of its results. This rapidly developing electronic environment provides university faculties and students with new options for the collection and dissemination of scholarly information. The AAU initiated the Research Libraries project to identify options that would both expand access to University-generated information and reduce the unit costs of that access. The reports of the three task forces were presented to the AAU presidents and chancellors at the 1994 spring meeting, and were unanimously endorsed by the membership on April 19, 1994. Full text of the task force reports is available in print format from the Association of Research Libraries for $12 each and in electronic format from the ARL GOPHER at: arl.cni.org under the Scholarly Communications menu.
