There is a range of opportunities for you as an ALCTS member to participate at Annual Conference. Don't let them pass you by! Breakfast with the Leaders If you have not already done so, call the Office to reserve a seat for the ALCTS Breakfast with Leaders. This is a chance for ALCTS members who are not on an ALCTS committee to find out how to become involved in the Association -- what avenues to participation there are, what stumbling blocks need to be removed. It is also a time for ALCTS leaders to hear your needs, interests, and concerns. The first breakfast with ALCTS Leaders, held at Annual Conference in San Francisco in 1992, was a terrific success, with all members who took part in it urging that there be another such event. So, don't miss it. The breakfast is on Saturday, June 25, 1994, from 7:30 to 8:45 in the Miami Beach Convention Center-A202. Call the ALCTS Office at 800-545-2433 ext. 5035. Leave your name, address, phone, and particular technical services interest (serials, acquisitions, collection development, cataloging, preservation, reproduction of library materials, or general technical services. Membership Booth Joe Raker can still use some warm, enthusiastic ALCTS members to pass on the good word about ALCTS, greet members and potential members, and generally be friendly to those who come to the ALCTS Membership Booth in the Convention Center. He would especially welcome people who could staff the booth on Monday. Call Joe at 617-536-5400 ext. 402 or e-mail him at jraker@bpl.org. Even an hour of your time would be helpful -- and fun. Discussion Groups So far we have published discussion group topics in three recent issues of _AN2_ (nos 11,12,and 14). There are still more to come before the last issue before Annual Conference. You are welcome to attend and participate in these discussions -- they are open to all. You can pick up a listing with brief descriptions of the topics from the ALCTS literature bins #35, 36, and 37. Listings are complete as of June 10. The daily conference newspaper, _Cognotes_, also runs disucssion group topics. Programs ALCTS is offering more than 30 hours of programming at Annual Conference. Whatever your field of interest in technical services, you will find a program waiting for you. The Membership Booth will have a list of programs by both topic and date, or you may pick one up from the literature bins (#35, 36, and 37). Volunteer Forms The ALCTS Office at ALA in the Miami Beach Convention Center will have volunteer forms available for members who would like to be considered for a committee appointment next year (beginning after the Annual Conference in Chicago in 1995). Appointments are considered and made by section vice-chairs and the ALCTS vice-president between annual conferences. If you don't know what committee would interest you, either check out the list of them in the _ALA Handbook of Organization_ (you can peek at one at the ALCTS Office in the Miami Beach Convention Center) or, even better, sign up for the ALCTS Breakfast with the Leaders! There are lots of ways you can have an ALCTS-filled Annual Conference! ************************************************************************* AS POLICY AND PLANNING SEEKS INPUT ON GOALS The Policy and Planning Committee of the ALCTS Acquisitions Section has drafted goals and objectives for the section. Loretta joined the ALCTS and LAMA divisions as Administrative Secretary this spring. She comes from a background in real estate construction and banking, most recently having worked at the Toronto Dominion Bank for five years as an administrative assistant in the credit department, where she quoted rates and completed loan data forms for multimillion dollar companies! Says Loretta, "I'm used to pressure -- in any one day a company could call for quotes on a $2.5 million loan and another could need loan data forms completed for another million or more." Before her bank work, Loretta was responsible for placing business tenants in shopping malls under construction. Board meetings should be a breeze! ************************************************************************* ACCESSING THE ALA GOPHER There is plenty to find on the new ALA Gopher, including ALCTS documents of all kinds. To access the ALA gopher, users can point their favorite gopher client to gopher.uic.edu (port 70). Once users access the gopher at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the ALA gopher be reached by selecting the "Library" option on the main menu, and the "American Library Association" option on the submenu. For users with gopher clients that support bookmarks, these tools can then be set to make subsequent access to ALA?s gopher nearly instantaneous. For users without a gopher client, free gopher software can be secured by anonymous FTP to boombox.micro.umn.edu; the software can be found in the directory /pub/gopher. This directory contains a number of gopher clients which operate on several different platforms. Clear as mud? Not to worry: Handouts and explanations of the new ALA gopher will be highlighted in the exhibits area of the Miami Beach Convention Center during Annual Conference. Unfortunately, the gopher will not be demonstrated live due to circumstances beyond the control of the Headquarters Librarian, but there will be someone available to answer questions. ************************************************************************* STUDENT ASSISTANTS HAVE OWN DISCUSSION LIST LISA-L is an open, unmoderated discussion list for student assistants who work in academic or public libraries.
