Are you willing to work with ALA to bring the program to your state? The network of downlink sites for "Achieving Breakthrough Service," a national video teleseminar on customer service to be presented on May 12, 1994, with the guidance of Harvard Business School Professor James L. Heskett, is now being developed. The plan is to identify an average of 8-10 sites per state. The four- hour program will be appropriate for management and frontline staff in all types of libraries. It will be offered on a breakeven basis, with no charge to the site, and an individual registration fee with a price break for ALA members, groups and early registration. Fees will range from $19.95 to $50.00 per person. Site licenses will also be available. Please call Peggy Barber at 312-280-3217 or 800-545-2433 x 3217 if you have questions or need more information. ************************************************************************* ALCTS TO CONSIDER NOMINATIONS FOR IFLA STANDING COMMITTEES During its meetings at the Los Angeles Midwinter Meeting the ALCTS Board of Directors will be considering recommendations for nominations for IFLA Standing Committees for the term 1995 to 1999. Persons interested in being considered for one of the Standing Committees (see list of ALCTS-related ones below) should contact the relevant section chair or Cecily Johns, the Chair of the ALCTS International Relations Committee. The ALCTS International Relations Committee will consider the nominations and section recommentations and make its recommendation to the ALCTS Board of Directors. ALCTS, along with other units of ALA, will submit its list of nominees to Edwin Holmgren, Chair of the ALA IRC Subcommittee on IFLA. That Subcommittee will make recommendations to the parent committee, which reports to the ALA Executive Board, usually in the fall. The Standing Committees whose work includes areas of specific ALCTS concerns are these: Section on Acquisition and Exchange, for term 1995-1999 Section on Bibliography, for term 1995-1999 Section on Cataloguing, for term 1995-1999 Section on Classification and Indexing, for term 1995-1999 Section on Conservation, for term 1995-1999 Section on Information Technology, for term 1995-1999 (incumbent, Ching-chih Chen, is eligible, by IFLA rules, to be renominated) Section on Serial Publications, for term 1995-1999 Section on Statistics, for term 1995-1999 (in IFLA, this includes price indexes) Nominees must be willing to attend these conferences at their own expense, as there are no ALA funds to support the travel of its representatives. The relevant conferences will be held in Istanbul, Beijing, and Bangkok (sites for 1997 and 1998 are still under discussion), usually in late August and for a period of eight days. There will be forms for nomination available at the ALCTS Office in the Los Angeles Convention Center. ************************************************************************* UPDATE ON SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATIONS The ALCTS Scholarly Communications Committee invites all ALA Midwinter Attendees to join the committee at their annual Midwinter Reporting Session to hear presentations on some of the most active and exciting projects currently affecting scholarly communications processes. Jointly funded by the Commission and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, these fellowships will provide advanced administrative training in archives. For the 1994-95 fellowship year, the stipend is $35,000, with up to $7,000 in fringe benefits, for a nine- to twelve-month period beginning between August and October 1994. Fellows will also have some funds available for professional travel during their fellowship year. Fellows are provided with a series of administrative and decision-making experiences. Included in past fellowships have been such diverse areas as appraisal, budget preparation, personnel administration, publications, plant operation, long-range planning, disaster planning, collection policy development, and committee activities. In addition to work in these areas of administration, the fellow is expected to complete a technical project. Applicants should have between two and five years' experience in professional archival work. While not required, it is desirable that applicants have the equivalent of two semesters of full-time graduate training in a program containing an archives education component. Host institutions for the 1994-95 fellowship will be the Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul, MN; and the University of Washington Libraries, Seattle, WA. Fellowship application forms and more complete descriptions of the individual host programs should be requested from the NHPRC, National Archives Building, Washington, DC 20408 (telephone: 202/501-5610). The forms must be completed and received by the Commission by March 1, 1994. ************************************************************************* ************************************************************************* ALCTS NETWORK NEWS (ISSN 1056-6694) is published irregularly by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services, a division of the American Library Association.
