In order to accommodate all requests for publicizing meetings of discussion groups, there will be an additional issue with further reports. As always, double check locations and times in the program book (and its supplements). LITA/ACLTS AUTHORITY CONTROL IN THE ONLINE ENVIRONMENT DATE: Sunday, February 6, 1994 TIME: 2:00-5:30 PLACE: Sheraton Grande, Theater 1 Following brief updates on such issues as the Cooperative Cataloging Council authority control recommendations, the forthcoming NACO manual, the LC Series Group report, and research projects on computer-generated authority records, ACIG officers and ad hoc committee chairs will lead an open discussion forum on current issues in authority control. After the forum there will be a business meeting to plan future interest group meetings. All those with automated authority control issues or questions are most welcome to attend. Some questions addressed at the meeting might include: What can we do to help each other in sharing authority work and responsibility? Are libraries mounting and maintaining the full Library of Congress authority files? If so, how has it affected workflow and OCLC/RLIN costs? Are catalogers experiencing more pressure to cut corners with respect to authority control? How do libraries that use an authority control vendor, manage database maintenance when the records are out to the vendor, coordinate with NACO contribution, claim changed authority records, and resolve conflicts in the catalog? What does access to Internet resources and full text databases mean for the future of authority control? ********** JOINT CMDS/PLMS DISCUSSION GROUP INAUGURAL MEETING DATE: Sunday, Feburary 6, 1994 TIME: 9:30-12:30 PLACE: Los Angeles Convention Center 406-B Help set the agenda for enhanced cooperation between collection development and preservation by attending the first meeting of the CMDS/PLMS Discussion Group. Participants in this discussion group will explore the common ground between selection and management of collections and their preservation, with an emphasis on the challenge of national preservation planning. The inaugural meeting will fashion an agenda for the discussion group and plan the format and substance of future sessions. Part I: 9:30-10:30 Converging imperatives: fashioning an agenda for cooperation. Janet E. Gertz, Chair of PLMS, and Connie K. McCarthy, Chair of CMDS will present issues and concerns of mutual interest for group discussion. Part II: 10:30-12:30 National Preservation planning iniatives and needs. Presentation of selected examples for discussion: Chicago Planning Conference; Preserving the Literature of Disciplines (Sam Demas, Cornell); RLG Plans the Whole Discipline Approach (Nancy Elkington, RLG); Preserving Scientific Literature: Needs and Prospects (Jennifer Banks, MIT). EDU or 617-283-2103) ********* COMPUTER FILES DISCUSSION GROUP: COPYRIGHT AND LICENSING IN THE ELECTRONIC WORLD DATE: Sunday, February 6, 1994 TIME: 9:30-11:30 PLACE: Biltmore Los Angeles Hotel, Emerald Room Presenter will be Paul Geller, Attorney, Los Angeles/Adjunct Professor University of Southern California, and Denise Davis, Coordinator, Electronic Reference Services, University of Maryland. The meeting will include reports on computer file activities from the Utilities (OCLC, and WLN), MARBI, CC:DA, and the Library of Congress. There will also be special reports on IFLA, LC Marvel and the TEI/Electronic Header as well as the election of a new vice-chair/chair.
