These awards will be presented during the 1994 ALA Annual Conference in Miami. Best of LRTS -- for the best paper published during 1993 in _Library Resources & Technical Services_, the official journal of ALCTS. Esther J. Piercy Award -- to a librarian with not more than 10 years' professional experience for outstanding contribution to librarianship in the field of technical services and for outstanding promise for continuing contributions and leadership. Bowker/Ulrich's Serials Librarianship Award -- for distinguished contributions to serial librarianship within the previous three years demonstrated through participation in professional associations and/or library education programs, contributions to the body of serials literature, development of tools or methods to enhance access to, or management of, serials, or other advances leading to a better understanding of the field of serials. The award, $1,500 donated by the R.R. Bowker Co., is administered by the Serials Section. Margaret Mann Citation -- for outstanding professional achievement in cataloging or classification through publication of significant professional literature, participation in professional cataloging associations, or valuable contributions to practice in individual libraries. The award is administered by the Cataloging and Classification Section. Blackwell North America Scholarship Award -- to honor the author or authors of the outstanding book or paper published in 1993 in the field of acquisitions, collection development and related areas of resources development in libraries. The award, $2,000 donated by Blackwell North America, is given to the U.S, or Canadian library school of the recipient author' choice. First Step Award - Serials Section Wiley Development Grant -- to provide librarians new to the serials field with the opportunity to broaden their perspectives and to encourage professional development in serials librarianship through attendance at the ALA Annual Cnference and participation in Serials Section activities. The $1,500 grant, donated by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., is administered by the Serials Section. The deadline for all awards is December 1. It is published by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). C&RL NewsNet contains all of the items in the "News from the Field" column, _C&RL News_ classified advertising, general editorial and subscription information -- and job listings -- and will be available about two to three weeks before the printed version. To access C&RL NewsNet, locate the University of Illinois at Chicago in the menu of all servers maintained on gopher at the University of Minnesota. Gopher clients can be connected directly to host "gopher.uic.edu", port 70. Any suggestions about content and/or format may be directed to Mary Ellen Davis at u38398@uicvm.uic.edu. ************************************************************************* ALA PUBLISHES TWO NEW BOOKS Guide to Technical Services Resources The American Library Association has published the _Guide to Technical Services Resources_, which describes more than 2000 selected print, electronic, and expert sources for modern technical services, practice, research, and education. Under the editorship of Peggy Johnson (University of Minnesota/St. Paul), the _Guide_ organizes and annotates sources in technical services in general, acquisitions, descriptive cataloging, classification, subject analysis systems, authority control, filing and indexing, serials management, collection management, preservation, reproduction of library materials, database management, and access services. International Subscription Agents Current information on the procurement services of more than 250 subscription agents throughout the world is available in the sixth edition of _International Subscription Agents_. The standard information provided for each subscription agent includes address, countries or geographical areas served, types of materials supplied, catalogs or lists available to customers, notes on special services, the year the business was established, and the extent to which operations are computerized. It also includes fax and telephone numbers, and each vendor's interfaces with library systems, its automated customer reports, back-issue capability, and payment options. ($31.50 ALA member) at 800-545-2433, press 7. ************************************************************************* PRESERVATION NEWS Commission Releases Scientific Research Directory of Non-Print Media _The Directory of Information Sources on Scientific Research Related to the Preservation of Round recordings, Still and Moving Images and Magnetic Tape_ is a comprehensive listing of laboratories and organizations as well as sources of scientific and technical information on the preservation of non-print media. This 16-page publication includes the initiatives, programs, and contact information of more than 35 entries including databases, serials, monographs and articles, and conference proceedings. The focus of the directory is on information from the public sector and non-profit institutions, organizations, and publications. Commission on Preservation & Access Annual Report Available The 1992-92 annual report of CPA focuses on the digital world and the transforming changes that have resulted in the evolution of preservation technologies. In a special section CPA President Patricia Battin explores the implications of the virtual library for preservation and access activities. This document is availble free of charge from the person and address above. Northeast Document Conservation Center Workshop in Chicago The Northeast Document Conservation Center is sponsoring a workshop on preservation microfilming at the Chicago Historical Society Nov. 8-10. The program is designed to train personnel in research institutions to plan, implement, and manage filming projects. It will include learning skills for planning microfilming projects as well as hands-on experience in inspection and quality control procedures.
