The 25-page report summarizes the results of an open forum conducted by the National Commission on 20-21 July 1992 in Washington, D.C. The NCLIS forum provided an opportunity for representatives from 24 library and information service organizations, as well as representatives from related industries, associations, agencies, and institutions, to offer comments, suggestions, proposals, and positions related to the roles of libraries and information services in the National Research and Education Network. In summarizing the presentation at the forum, the report identifies themes, positions, assumptions and concerns of the library and information services community, both as providers of information to be carried on NREN and as representatives of large groups of users and potential users of the network. Information included in this report is intended to assist the Office of Science and Technology Policy in preparing the report to Congress called for in the High Performance Computing Act of 1991, P.L. 102-194 (Dec. 9, 1991). The report focuses on fulfilling the potential for extending the services and effectiveness of libraries and information services for all Americans through high-capacity, high-speed networks and electronic data bases. A limited number of copies of the Report are available from the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science. ************************************************************************* CONTINUING EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES REPLItech International REPLItech International will hold a three-day conference and exposition for duplicators and replicators of video and audio tape, optical discs and floppy disks on June 15-17 1993, Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara/San Jose, California. Visioning Course The Management Institute, School of Business, University of Wisconsin-Madison, will present a course on Visioning, February 9-11, 1993. Creation of a vision statement takes an immense amount of quality thought, teamwork, and time. This intensive seminar is intended to provide students with the foundation and direction needed to create an effective vision statement by identifying and reviewing several participative methods to create the vision that fits each organization's unique situation. The course mixes presentation, case studies, lectures, group discussions and exercises. The most important function of leadership is creating a vision of the organization's preferred future. According to program director Dr. Buck Joseph, "A vision is an essential act of leadership that tells the world who the organization is. It is an expression of optimism and hope." The $895 program fee will include instruction, notebook and materials, luncheons and refreshment breaks. For more information, call toll-free at 1-800/292-8962 or 608/262-2155. Or, write to Management Institute, School of Business, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 432 N Lake St., Madison , WI 53706. Fax: 608/262-4617. Preservation Management for College Libraries SOLINET and the College Libraries Committee of the Commission on Preservation and Access will present a week-long seminar, "Preservation Management for College Libraries" at Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts, July 22-30, 1993. This seminar will enable academic librarians to implement effective, decentralized strategies for preserving their general collections. The 20 applicants selected for the seminar will come away with priorities, an action plan, and a timetable, as well as drafts of critical documents tailored to their own libraries. The seminar will be most useful for the librarian responsible--often on a part-time basis--for planning and coordinating preservation activities for the library's circulating collection. Total cost for tuition, room and board (including all meals except one lunch and dinner), and instructional materials is $1,500.
