Dr. Duncan is one of the speakers at this year's ALCTS President's Program on "After the Electronic Revolution, Will You Be the First to Go?" The article in the Chronicle of Higher Education reports on the "Museum Informatics Project" at the University of California, which is a "new venture designed to make [the herbarium collection] and other non-book resources accessible to experts and laymen alike" through a computerized catalog. The project "will develop computer-based catalogs with text information and images of their materials" including art slides, scientific specimens, and other materials. The article reports that "Anyone will be able to study the contents of a collection and see pictures by searching an electronic database ... over the campus network and, eventually, over national and international networks." Dr. Duncan will report more about the project during his presentation on Monday June 29 in the Hilton Continental Ballrooms 1-5. The President's Program will begin at about 9:30 am, immediately after the ALCTS Membership Meeting and Awards Presentation, which will begin at 9:00 am. ************************************************************************* ALCTS ASIAN-LANGUAGE PRECONFERENCE CANCELLED Due to low registration, ALCTS is regrettably forced to cancel the preconference entitled "Starting Asian Language Collections in Public and Academic Libraries." Over the next day or so registrants will be notified by phone, and registration fees will be returned accordingly. There are still some openings for two other preconferences ALCTS is offering: "Electronic Data Interchange and the Library," and "Library Buildings and Preservation." If you are interested in any of these preconferences, please call the ALCTS Office at 800-545-2433, ext. 5035. We will be happy to take reservation information over the phone. The preconference on Implementing USMARC Format Integration is fully booked and registration has been closed for it. ALCTS is planning to offer this preconference in a slightly modified format as a series of institutes around the country. Further information will be made known as it comes available. ************************************************************************* ************************************************************************* ALCTS NETWORK NEWS (ISSN 1056-6694) is published irregularly by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services, a division of the American Library Association.
