Sullivan, who has had a distinguished career as a library and academic administrator, will officially begin her duties on August 17, 1992. Her contract will extend until August 14, 1994. During this period of time the Board will develop and implement a search process for Dr. Sullivan's successor. The Board wishes to state unequivocally that no member of the present Board will be a candidate for the Executive Director position. "Dr. Sullivan brings innumerable strengths to this position including extensive management experience and administrative skills," said ALA President Patricia Glass Schuman. "Her skills in interpersonal relations and her broad understanding of the association and the profession--both as they are today and could be tomorrow--coupled with her incisive wit and common sense make her an admirable choice for this position," said Marilyn Miller, ALA President-Elect. At Northern Illinois University (NIU), Sullivan has been the senior administrator responsible for the Founders Memorial Library on the main campus of DeKalb and five branch libraries. She is also a tenured professor in the Department of Library and Information Studies. From 1981-1990, she served as dean of the College of Professional Studies at NIU, overseeing two schools--Nursing and Allied Health Professions--and four departments--Communicative Disorders, Human and Family Resources, Library and Information Studies and Military Science. Sullivan, a graduate of Clarke College, received her master's degree in library science from Catholic University of America and a doctoral degree from the University of Chicago. "Although I have scarcely exhausted the challenges and opportunities in higher education, I look forward to discovering more in association administration," Sullivan said. "Members of the ALA in many categories--Executive Board, Council, staff, media representatives--have encouraged me to accept the position of executive director at this critical time. So I am. As a long-time friend and colleague reminded me last week, it is good to be somewhat in awe of the association, while still feeling the closeness of loyalty and pride that characterize my relationship with ALA and with librarianship. To use an expression I took from Dag Hammarskjold years ago, and which I've used frequently at commencements - 'For all that has been thanks. To all that will be - yes.'" Sullivan succeeds Linda F. Crismond, who has served as executive director from September 1989 until May 12, 1992. ************************************************************************* APPLICANTS SOUGHT FOR ALA MINORITY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM Applications are being accepted for the 1992-93 ALA Minority Fellowship Program. The program is designed to provide an opportunity for minority librarians to gain an understanding of association management, ALA's structure and operations, and how policy is formulated and implemented. The selected fellow will spend 70 to 75 percent of the time working in an ALA division or program office at ALA Headquarters in Chicago, 20 percent on an independent special project and 5 to 10 percent in overall ALA activities and association management workshops. To qualify, an applicant must: be a librarian/information professional (American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific/Islander, African American, or Latino); hold a master's degree from a library science program accredited by the ALA or from a program that meets the ALA/American Association of School Libraries (AASL) curriculum guidelines within a unit accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education; have a minimum of three years of professional working experience in a library or information science environment and be a member of ALA at the start of the fellowship. The 92-93 stipend for the ALA Minority Fellow is $30,000 plus medical, dental, life and disability insurance and relocation assistance to Chicago.
