AN2 was born out of a desire by the leadership of ALCTS to be highly responsive to membership needs. The late-breaking news that AN2 carried during the past year, as well as the easy-to-use machine-readable files such as conference schedules, have all combined to make this a key new service of ALCTS. As with any enterprise such as this, there are some key individuals to thank. Karen Muller and Alex Bloss share the honors for their hard work in assembling issues and ensuring their timely distribution. Nancy John, our ALCTS past-past-President, was instrumental in setting up the electronic structure at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Ann Swartzell, editor of the ALCTS Newsletter, also shares responsibility for helping to compile news for AN2. This date has special meaning for me. AN2 celebrates its first anniversary on the same day that I celebrate my 20th wedding anniversary. So AN2 we salute you. May you have many, many more! -- Arnold Hirshon, President, ALCTS ************************************************************************** ALA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR LINDA CRISMOND RESIGNS President Patricia Glass Schuman and President-Elect Marilyn Miller met with ALA staff on May 14, 1992. President Schuman read the following announcement to the ALA staff: "On behalf of the ALA Executive Board, I must regretfully announce the resignation of Linda Crismond as Executive Director of the American Library Association, effective May 12. We are grateful to Linda for her service and wish her every success in her future endeavors." "Shortly, the Executive Board will announce the appointment of an Interim Exeutive Director. The Interim Executive Director will serve for a maximum of 18-24 months. During that period the Board will take measured steps to formulate and conduct a search for an Executive Director." Schuman also announced that Deputy Executive Director Roger Parent is in charge of headquarters operations until the appointment of the interim executive director. Linda F. Crismond became the 19th Executive Director of the American Library Association on September 5, 1989, succeeding Thomas J. Galvin. Prior to coming to ALA she had been the director of the Los Angeles County Public Library for nine years, and assistant university librarian at the University of Southern California from 1973 to 1980. ************************************************************************* HEARINGS ON ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF ALCTS At the 1992 Midwinter Meeting, the ALCTS Organizational Structure Task Force held an open hearing to receive opinions and ideas from ALCTS members on the future direction of ALCTS. The Task Force reviewed the transcript of the hearings and subsequently held a two-day planning retreat in order to develop a vision of ALCTS for the 21st century. It was guided in its deliberations by concepts presented in a video, Discovering the Future: The Business of Paradigms, by Joel Barker. The Task Force urges all ALCTS members to view this video if it is available in their library. The Task Force will present its vision and receive comments at open hearings on Sunday, June 28, at 8-9 a.m., and Monday, June 29, at 4:30-5:30 p.m. Also, the video will be shown and a discussion held on the work of the Task Force during the first meeting of the ALCTS Board of Directors, Saturday, June 27, 2-4 p.m. ************************************************************************* ALCTS MEMBERSHIP BOOTH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Are you planning to be in San Francisco for the ALA Annual Conference? The program, "Making the Cut: Creative Solutions for the Economic Times for Publishers, Vendors and Librarians," will focus on the "chain-reaction" effect of the current economic situation on each group within the library marketplace. Issues to be covered include publishing and editorial concerns, vendor and publisher marketing, and sales strategies and creative solutions to implement during budget cuts and lower sales. Long will share his findings, published in The American Forecaster, about current sociological and economic trends. He will show how these trends will influence libraries and the library marketplace and will address his theories on the future economic rewards that will result from support for the development of strong, modern American libraries. ************************************************************************* DISCUSSION GROUP TOPICS FOR ANNUAL CONFERENCE (Editor's note: All short announcements of ALCTS discussion group topics will be published in AN2 as they become available. Please send the announcement of your group's topic, with date and time of meeting, to u34261@uicvm.) LITA/ALCTS Microcomputer Support of Technical Services Interest Group Sunday, June 28, 2:00-4:00 Formerly known as the LITA Innovative Microcomputer Support of Cataloging Interest Group, this group will meet for the first time under its new rubric, with its expanded scope, and under joint sponsorship of LITA and ALCTS. Our 1992 summer meeting will feature a presentation by Eugene Ferguson and Bruce Johnson of the Library of Congress on LC's development of the Cataloger's Desktop. The Desktop is a CD-ROM product that is being designed and marketed as a generic cataloging tool. The developers have been working closely with the cataloging community to determine its contents and its software and hardware requirements. Possible contents include: Subject Cataloging Manual-Subject Headings, LC classification schedules, AACR2, USMARC format documentation, and LC Rule Interpretations. Johnson and Ferguson will not only provide a description of the product and a status report on its development, they will lead a discussion and ask for input on features that will make the Cataloger's Desktop the most useful tool possible. -- Chair: Stephen Marine, Co-chair: Anna Wang. ALCTS Automated Acquisitions/In-Process Control Systems Disucssion Group Sunday, June 28, 9:30-11:00 a.m. Discussion leaders, Rosann Bazirjian (Syracuse University), Richard Jasper (Emory University), and Trisha Davis (Ohio State University) will share with the group their experiences addressing the breakdown of traditional lines between acquisitions and cataloging departments brought about by automation.
