ANNUAL CONFERENCE PUBLICITY REMINDER ************************************************************************** NEW UPDATE TO USMARC CONCISE FORMATS UPDATE The new USMARC Format for Classification Data has been incorporated into the latest update to the Concise guide to all USMARC formats from the Library of Congress. Update No. 2, USMARC Concise Formats, is now available from the Library's Cataloging Distribution Service. USMARC Concise Formats, first published in 1988, is the only publication that brings together in one looseleaf volume the content designators that are defined for each of the USMARC communication formats. Now, with Update No. 2, this quick-reference tool is expanded to include USMARC Format for Classification Data. Prepared by the Library's Network Development and MARC Standards Office, Update No. 2 also includes changes, additions, and deletions that have been published for the other three USMARC formats. Members of the USMARC community who purchased the June 1988 base text and the first update (March 1990) will find that all pages in the USMARC Concise Formats are replaced in this update. New subscribers to USMARC Concise Formats need only purchase Update No. 2 to have the complete publication. Update No. 2 is $28 (North America) or $30 (international) from the Library of Congress, Customer Services Section, Cataloging Distribution Service, Washington, DC 20541-5017. Telephone: (202) 707-6100 or FAX (202) 707-1334. ************************************************************************* E-MAIL ADDRESSES FOR ALA STAFF At the end of February, ALA acquired a block of e-mail accounts for staff members in order to replace the ALANET accounts which became inoperative. These accounts are listed here for your convenience. Not all of these accounts are in full use (and ALA staff, just like staff at any institution using the Internet, have varying skill levels with use of these accounts), so do follow up an e-mail message with a paper copy or a phone call if you do not get a response after a few days, particularly the first time you contact an individual by this means. These accounts can be either Bitnet or Internet addresses, depending on whether you add the .bitnet suffix or the .uic.edu suffix for the Internet. However, neither suffix is required for proper processing of your message by our Postmaster. Charles Brown, Director of the Arlington (Va.) Public Library, Toni Carbo-Bearman, Dean of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh, Mary Cronin, University Librarian at Boston College, and Paula Kaufman, Dean of Libraries at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, have been added to the group. Established in 1989 by IBM's Academic Information Systems (ACIS) Division, INFORMA works with IBM management and staff in exploring, developing, and implementing new information technologies. It has organized conferences the past two years on technology planning and on multimedia and will sponsor a third conference, May 10-12, 1992 at Hilton Head, South Carolina. The conference theme this year is "Campus-wide Information Systems: Opportunities for Libraries." Brown, Carbo-Bearman, Cronin, and Kaufman join present committee members David Bishop of the University of Illinois at Urbana, James Corey from the Florida Center for Library Automation, Peggy Federhart of IBM ACIS, Ronald Leach of Indiana State University, Richard Sweeney from Polytechnic University in New York, James Williams of the University of Colorado at Boulder, and Jordan Scepanski from California State University, Long Beach, the committee chair. ************************************************************************* CONFERENCES, SEMINARS, ETC. IASSIST Conference The 18th annual conference of the International Association for Social Science Information Service and Technology (IASSIST) will be held at the Concourse Hotel in Madison, Wisconsin, on May 26-29, 1992. The conference theme, Data, Networks, and Cooperation: Linking Resources in a Distributed World, expresses IASSIST members' concern for managing and sharing computer-readable data during a time of increasing demand coupled with decreasing fiscal resources. For further information, contact Program Committee Chair Ilona Einowski, Data Archivist, UC Data, University of California, 2538 Channing Way, Berkely, CA 94720. Phone: 510-642-6571, e-mail: CEBSUS85@UCBCMSA.BITNET. United Kingdom Office for Library Networking National Conference UKOLN's national conference on Networking and the Future of Libraries will be held 2-5 April, 1992. The conference will focus on strategic and policy issues rather than on technology. The physical telecommunications network infrastructure--nationally and internationally--is already in place and developing at an increasing rate. There is a need in the United Kingdom for a planned information infrastructure with the requisite policies, resources, services, and tools. The implications for libraries are incalculable. William Arms, Carnegie Mellon University, and Paul Evan Peters, Coalition for Networked Information, will be among the speakers. For further information, direct enquiries to UKOLN, The Library, University of Bath, Bath BA2 7AY, UK, or e-mail: UKOLN@UK.AC.BATH. St. John's University Workshop on Book Indexing "Book Indexing: Principles and Techniques" is the theme of a Professional Development Seminar to be taught by Dr. Bella Hass Weinberg, Associate Professor, Division of Library and Information Science, St. John's University, on Friday, May 15, 1992 from 9.00 am. to 5:00 p.m. at the Sixty East Club, 60 East 42nd St., New York City. The fee for the Seminar is $85 including lunch, coffee breaks, and handouts. The seminar will introduce the preparation of "back-of-the-book" indexes, covering concepts of indexable matter, structure of index entries, cross references, filing, format, and indexer-publisher relations. Manual and computer-assisted techniques will be discussed. Continuing Education Units (.6 CEU) will be available to those attending. Authors, publishers, information scientists, librarians, and indexers should benefit from the seminar. For further information, contact: Dr. Emmett Corry, Director, Division of Library and Information Science St. John's University, Jamaica NY 11439; Phone: (718) 990-6200; Fax (718) 380-0353. Electronic Preservation The Wisconsin Preservation Program (WISPPR) will host a conference, "Electronic Preservation: Preservation of Electronic Formats for Preservation," at the State Historical Society in Madison, Wisconsin, on June 3-4, 1992. Invited speakers include Basil Manns, Library of Congress, speaking on research and testing electronic formats at LC ; Michael Pate, Marquette University, speaking on the Marquette Electronic Archive Project; Anne Keeney, Cornell University, speaking on the role of digital technology in the preservation of research library materials; Fynette Eaton, Center for Electronic Records National Archives and Electronic Record and Preservation; and representatives from research and development at University Microfilms, Inc. and the 3M corporation. Conference registration will be $50.00. Registration materials may be obtained by contacting WISPPR Conference, 728 State St. Room 464, Madison, WI 53706; (608) 263-2773; FAX (608) 263-3684. ************************************************************************* ANNUAL CONFERENCE PUBLICITY REMINDER Volume 3, number 4, of the ALCTS Newsletter will contain announcements and program notes about the ALA Annual Conference to be held in San Francisco.
