VAN DEROEF APPOINTED TO DCEPC UPCOMING SEMINARS, ETC. ************************************************************************** OCLC AND RLG TO EXCHANGE CJK RECORDS On February 25, 1992, OCLC and the Research Libraries Group, Inc. (RLG) announced that they had reached an agreement to exchange and load OCLC and RLIN CJK records. The two utilities agreed to a monthly direct exchange of Chinese-Japanese-Korean (CJK) bibliographic records, effective January 1, 1992. Exchange via tape should begin soon, and both organizations will be sending more information shortly to their users and other interested parties. In making the announcement to OCLC's users, Andrew H. Wang, Director, Asia Pacific and Technical Services Division, said "I am sure you will agree with me that the CJK user community will continue to benefit from access to the CJK records of both OCLC and RLG through this direct exchange. OCLC believes that this simple, straightforward exchange is preferable to the indirect, slower, and more costly method of distribution via the CJK Contributed Book Service. OCLC's commitment to the CJK program remains strong. In the second half of this year, OCLC will introduce its second generation of CJK system to take advantage of state-of-the-art hardware and software technology. Shortly thereafter, we will begin work to move CJK from the First System over to The PRISM Service to enhance access to CJK records." According to Jennifer Hartzell, Director, RLG Corporate Communications, RLG will be giving their members and users more information in the March issue of the quarterly news bulletin, "Operations Update." For more information contact Jennifer Hartzell at bl.jlh@rlg.bitnet or bl.jlh@rlg.stanford.edu, or Kate F. Nevins, Vice President, Corporate Relations, OCLC, at kfn@rsch.oclc.org. ************************************************************************* LC CATALOGING MODIFICATION PROPOSALS (UPDATE) John Byrum, Chief, Descriptive Cataloging Division, Library of Congress has reported that deadline for comments on the ten Library of Congress Cataloging Modification Proposals has again been extended, this time until March 20th. Companies implementing the Z39.50 protocol are invited to register as implementors by contacting the Z39.50 Maintenance Agency, c/o Library of Congress, Network Development and MARC Standards Office, Washington, DC 20540. Phone 202-707-6237. The first register will be issued in the Spring of 1992; to be included, a company must provide information by April 1. The purpose of the register is to provide information on the development and availability of products compatible with ANSI/NISO Z39.50. The Z39.50 Maintenance Agency will provide a copy of the register to interested parties upon request. The register will also allow the maintenance agency to contact implementors regarding maintenance matters. Thus implementors are encouraged to register for two purposes: to provide information on products to potential customers, and to receive relevant maintenance information. To be eligible for registration, a company must either offer a Z39.50 product, have begun implementation, or have definite plans to do so in the near future. Registration by a company is voluntary and there is no fee for registration. ************************************************************************* HELENA M. The seminar will review the current practice of cataloging 19th-century imprints for special collections in the context of other cataloging practices (such as following AACR2 or using DCRB (Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Books)) and of the nature of the material itself. Topics will include the cataloging of issues and states, tract society and children's publications, serials, illustrated materials, and single sheet publications. Three ARL Conferences The Association of Research Libraries Office of Management Services (OMS) is sponsoring the 3rd International Conference of Library Fee-based Services to be held on October 8-10, 1992, in Tempe, Arizona. The theme of the conference will be "Quality Assurance: Bringing Business Practices to Bear on Non-Profit Services Delivery." Planned as a two-day conference, speakers and program sessions first will explore conceptual foundations and theoretical issues related to quality management of library fee-based service operations in the 1990s. The second day's sessions will emphasize practical information exchange and basic skills involved in the successful operation of library fee-based services. Conference attendance will be limited to 250 participants, so early registration is encouraged. The registration fee for the two-day meeting is $295. The OMS will present the Creativity to Innovation Workshop March 10-12, in Chicago. This workshop recognizes that, for many librarians, traditional problem solving methods are not enough ammunition for working through the problems facing today's libraries. Creativity to Innovation is designed to build skills in using individual and group creativity techniques in organizational problem solving. The workshop will be conducted by Maureen Sullivan, OMS Organizational Development Consultant, and Rhonda MacInnes, Training Program Coordinator at the National Library of Canada. The cost of the Workshop is $400 per person for ARL members ($465 for non-members), plus travel and accommodations. The OMS will also be presenting the annual Resource Management Institute this March 24-27, in Tampa, Florida. The Institute covers the relationship between organizational planning and resource management, budget preparation, basic accounmting concepts, responsibility for expenditure control, reporting functions and format, and techniques for budget presentation. The program also includes an integrative exercise that gives hands-on experience with developing, presenting and defending a budget. It will be conducted by Gerry Munoff, deputy director of the University of Chicago Library, and Susan Jurow, OMS Director. The cost of the Institute is $500 per person for ARL members ($550 for non-members), plus travel and accommodations.
